Canada’s mail service is more than happy to deliver through rain, snow or sleet, but just don’t ask Canuck letter carrier to climb any large steps.

Canada Post told Christine Charbonneau, who lives near the nation’s capital of Ottawa, that it would stop delivering mail to her home because her front porch steps were too high. At just under a foot (30 centimeters), her steps are four inches (10 centimeters) over what Canada’s postal service deems too dangerous to negotiate.

Charbonneau found out about the decision when she caught her letter carrier measuring her front porch steps.

"We just caught the Canada Post employee accidentally when we went to check for mail. In my eyes he was sneaking around so we asked for his identification and what he was doing. I said it was ridiculous to say that the step is too high. They were measuring other steps in the neighborhood to see if they were too high."

Charbonneau says her 77-year-old mother-in-law, who breathes through a tube, has no trouble negotiating the same steps.

But Canada Post, a Crown corporation, is sticking by its decision.

"Because employee safety is very important, we have to ensure access to mailboxes poses no hazard to our delivery staff and an extra four inches is too much," said corporation spokeswoman Martine Lepine.

Time to move your mail box to the bottom of your steps I guess.

How funny. The post office in my hometown has been catching hell for not delivering to mailboxes with cars or trash cans too close to them. They don't seem to care that not delivering the mail is a federal offense.

30 cm is a big step, that's nearly double the height of my steps. I'm glad there's an employer out there that cares about their workers. Fuck those householders and their stupid giant steps, giant steps . . . OF DOOM.

Being a postie must be a lousy job (hence 'going postal') and carrying stuff up massive steps can't make it more fun.
