A buckyball is a molecule made up of 60 or so carbon atoms that looks something like a soccer ball. The chemical it forms was given the name buckminsterfullerene in honor of, well, Buckminster Fuller, who had a thing for soccer-ball shaped things.
They're pretty cool things. Personally, I'm waiting for the first soccer game to be played with a buckyball. I'm sure some technogeeks will do it sooner or later.
When my film professor was in college, he lived near Buckey Fuller, and went to the school where the genius taught. Buckey would follow him to class, talking endlessly about the joys of geodesic domes.
