ooh

bleak view on relationships?

that's for me
too many movies glorify that shit

now, I didn't see this yet
I wanted to see it because it seems to be about something I've always wanted to do. .
. . . but it probably ends up being a message about how you shouldln't want to do that. . .and that would piss me off.

well, on the scientific side - it didnt really have a very strong science fiction aspect to it - like how they erased memories and all - that was way not the point of the movie I know- but still, there would be a lot of implications if you really did that erased huge chunks of memories -

Okay, in my view, that's a very distinct strength of the film. Because it wasn't ABOUT the science of mind erasing or the scientific possibilities or feasibilities of that process - it's a film about love and relationships at its core. And so for me, the closer they stick to that core while providing only what is absolutely necessary of the science fiction side is good and absolutely the right decision.

but really, I didnt like its view on relationships - like theyre kind of destined to happen and that you can be completely introverted like jim carey was, and just wait for some great relationship to come along - typically, if you just wait like that - I think - youll just be alone forever

and, then in the end- it seems like they were happy to get to go through their relationship again - but it seemed like they were acknowledging from the beginning that it was kind of doomed - she said "Ill get bored eventually" and he said "Ill find something wrong with the relationship eventually" and they were like - well, ok, at least we can get a couple years in before that inevitably happens -.... it seemed to me

so thats why I didnt really like it - it seems like people thought it was so romantic and such a good relationship movie - but the main messages of the movie about relationships was kind of bleak in my view.....

I got a different take out of the ending than you. I didn't see them as resigning themselves to the eventual disintegration of their relationship - I just saw them as continuing their relationship, in all its irrationality and potential for certain heartbreak, because of the possibility, just the chance, of love. And that to me IS romantic. Perhaps a little bleak, yes, but only if you concentrate on that aspect of it - it had an extremely hopeful upshot to the ending too.

thats cool - I can see that- that is romantic-
his introversion still kind of bothered me - but maybe thats just a personal peeve of mine - but I can see your view on the ending -

ah, i am glad there are not too many people agreeing in this thread. i am all for people having their own opinions... but it would make me sad to know a lot of people hate such an amazing, great movie! i am glad they don't. let's all make out with eachother while watching eternal sunshine.

thats actually why i liked it...the fact that these two people who realized that in the end they probably wouldnt work out, were willing to go for it anyway, just to spend what time together they could. that is to say, just living every moment for what it is, a moment. if only a fleeting one. what is life, if not just a series of fleeting moments?

and on a more personal level, i related to joel (jim carreys character) very very much. almost to the point of laughability. and ive had other people who know me tell me that the character is me.

I haven't, actually. Usually the people taking shots at me are better than that.

No, because everyone wants to analyze everything to the point of taking all the fun out of it and then they want to push their opinions on everyone else.

Apparently, Solaris can.

"let's all make out with eachother while watching eternal sunshine."

See?

And yeah, I love Eternal Sunshine, even though Jim Carrey annoys the fuck out of me. Kate Winslet in a 1960's skirt, flashing her panties = sealing ESotSM as an unforgettable film classic.

I got irritated with what I saw as Thom Yorkesque fashions and posturing, but other than that it was a good movie.
