They want your kidneys. They don't care if you're alive or dead, they want want a kidney from you. No, not black market kidney smuggling crime overlords, but the UK health service.

More than 6,000 people in the UK need a kidney transplant, but there is a severe shortage of donor organs.

Experts say receiving a kidney from a living donor produces better results than using an organ from a dead person.

However, the rates of living kidney donation in the UK are significantly lower than in many countries.

I see a couple of problems with this scheme: They will not allow people to sell or buy kidneys. A free market in body parts is essential to ensure a supply that meets demand. I'd happily sell a kidney for a couple of grand. The UK government has refused to change our organ donor scheme to "opt out" rather than "opt in". This reduces the quantity of available organs. Finally, this statement is worrying:

Health minister Rosie Winterton said: "The number of patients requiring a transplant has increased dramatically over recent years.

What are people doing to damage their kidneys? Surely there should be some education to stop people doing whatever it is to reduce demand for kidneys? Because if there are a bunch of people walking around with only one kidney you want them to be taking really good care of it.

Thats not too bad.
In Canada you don't have to pay for the organs or get paid to donate them. Though in sure there are places you could buy them to avoid the wait.
