In Denmark, a Lutheran minister who stated last year that he does not believe in God has been reinstated.

The country's Evangelical Lutheran Church suspended him in June 2004 because he said in an interview that "there is no heavenly God." Earlier this month, he was reinstated after renewing his vows, but will remain under the supervision of a bishop.

A regional bishop has said that "although he disagrees with Grosboell's views there should be room for him in Denmark's state church."

The minister's opinions about the non-existence of God remain the same.

So what exactly does one do and talk about in a position in a church when said individual doesn't believe in God? Are they going to make him a janitor with a fancy title or what? People are morons.

He too is a moron... who would go to his church? What is this world comming to when a minister can say he doesn't belive in God, reaffirm his vows yet still not belive in God?

Why would you want to be a minister if you don't believe in what you're doing? This is silly. surreal

well, does he not believe in a "heavenly god" or does he not believe in a higher power, period? i would guess that could make a difference.

Sounds like some sort of perverse practical joke....

I mean, how could anyone with ANY rational sense allow an atheist to be a Lutheran (or any denomination) minister? Even atheists should be scratching their heads over that one.

Then again, we are talking about a "state church"...in essence, a mixture of government and religion. It all makes sense now!

Just apply a little government bureaucracy to the mix and suddenly you have atheist ministers! Thank goodness the government doesn't oversee an atheist organization, other wise you'd see atheists handing out Bibles. surreal

If this guy fancies himself the spiritual shepherd of his flock, where does he intend to lead them to, the great Howard Johnson's in the sky or just a hole in the ground?

He only said that there is no heavenly God. Not that there isn't one entirely. Perhaps he believes in a non-supernatural God. Or perhaps he feels that the descriptions of God are metaphors designed to guide one towards a noble path.

Besides, how is a minister discarding God any more shocking to you than all the ministers who have discarded compassion?

I thought this was going to be about some fellow who suddnely rediscovered thier faith or something.

and on that unrelated note: its kinda funny how much press is given to people discovering god, rediscovering god, finding god hiding behind thier refridgerator etc.

I know its not feasible, but I'm curious about the people suddenly lose thier faith.

I'm not sure what people are shocked about. Religion is part morality, part ritual, and part supernatural beliefs. This guy has just discarded part 3 (the stupid part.)

Never heard it said better, but people want to feel the false sense of security of part 3 as well. You can't give your money away without a completely unbelievable amount of bullshit staring you in the face.
