Garden state was alright - it was a bit pretentious, if you ask me. But for a first effort, I thought it succeeded. There were 2 things i really didnt like about it. First, the wild-goose-chase thing for the trinket or whatever the hell it was. Second - the last 10 seconds of the film. We shouldn't have seen that dumb kiss. He should've just cut after they said "so what do we do now?"..... and FIN! No kiss please - that was, errr..... unncecessary, and dramatically childish.

Other than that, it was ok.

surreal

you know... I do agree with you. It would have been better without the search dragging on forever. But the screen couldn't have just gone blank at the end.

Shit, it reminded me of a bad "Say Anything" too, but nobody where I live agreed.

I know that some of the ages of everyone here will contradict this, but, my personal experiences with people and "Garden State" is that the older you are, the less you like it.

I watched it on HBO a month or so ago. I like the way it was shot and thought it was OK up until the very end. The tacked on happy ending seemed to totally contradict the main theme of the movie and that totally ruined it for me.

Wasn't the trinket the thing the friend stole off Zach Braff's dead mom's corpse? I thought the friend being so determined to get that thing back to Zach was pretty sweet.

yes, it was........and i thought it was sweet too

as for the ending, i don't think it contradicted the meaning of the film.
sure he finally woke up and began his journey to "find himself". but he decided he could do that while with Sam. and most importantly the thought that this is
"his life" and "it's all he has" motivated him to come back to her and not waste anymore of it.

Yeah, I did actually finally get around to seeing this movie. And I have to say it was even worse than I thought it would be. When I finally decided that I could kinda dig the characters of the movie, it ended.

Hmm, I suspect she was refering to the original creator of this thread. But I could be wrong. But just me two cents, I personally liked the movie a lot. A friend of mine, whom I made go see it, liked it a whole lot too, and he didn't think he was going to. It's one of the few movies I've bought, and I only buy the ones that I really like, so that's saying something.

The only part of that movie that's worthwile is the scene when Zach Braff is waiting tables in LA and everyone orders redbull to drink.

Ian Holm is amazing in any role he is given.

Yes, he is. He's also really great in some of the deleted scenes. It's too bad they took em out.
