it's also one of the best sci-fi films ever........Metropolis

Nosferatu is a great silent flick too....without it, Hitchcock's career would not have been the same.

I remember being completely floored by a German movie called Pandora's Box a few years ago. I'm sure it would all come back to me if I were to see it again, but currently, I cannot remember what it was about, just that I thought it was fantastic.

Un Chien Andalou, L'AGE D'OR, Cowards Bend The Knee, Man With the Movie Camera, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and of course Chaplin's silent films are all glorious achievements of the silent celluloid era.

Damn Un Chien is such a fucking great little flick.

I wholeheartedly agree with Sunrise and The Passion of Joan of Arc. And all things Chaplin. And Metropolis. Haxan is also a cool little film, as oddly constructed silent documentaries on witchcraft go wink.

I hate D.W. Griffith. I wrote a paper on his work for a class on southern history, and goddamn that man is overbearing. I did like Broken Blossoms, though, despite the racist overtones.

my favorite silent film came just after the advent of sound in the cinema. charlie chaplin's 1931 film City Lights. it breaks my heart and makes me laugh and it makes me jump for joy and believe that true love and goodness in the world really does exist.

also: nosferatu, der golem, the crowd, the battleship potemkin, greed, faust, the hunchback of notre dame, and of course...we can't forget mel brooke's Silent Movie.

I forgot about Haxan, I dig the version with the Burroughs narration.

That is what Bunuel wanted the eye ball scene to do. The eye is one of many surrealist symbols for the subconsciousness. The film is about the dissection of the subconsciousness.

Chaplin was a fan of the film.

Nosferatu rocks, Max Schreck gives one of the finest performances of that era as Count Orlok.

The images all originated from Dali's and Bunuel's subconsciousness. Has anyone ever watched Lumière et compagnie? I have only seen Lynch’s short but I have heard good things about the other 39 shorts.

Battleship Potemkin
Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Metropolis
Nosferatu
Modern Times (sure, there's some speech in it, but it's mostly silent)
City Lights
The Gold Rush
The Ring (Beautiful old Hitchcock film)
Lodger (another ancient Hitchcock)
The Golem
The General

I want to bitch about Sunrise! Ever since I have first heard of this movie I have thought, "Damn, I need to see that." So, since I'd seen Nosferatu and have faith in Murnau, I was just going to buy it. BUT YOU CAN'T! They released it on dvd as part of the Fox Studio Classics, but you can't buy it, you can only get it if you order three of their other movies and then they'll send it to you for free. I don't want that, dammit, I just want to buy it.

yeah, i've seen a few, they're pretty good...

stan brakhage's work (or at least what i've seen of it) is predominantly silent, really awesome work... metaphors on vision largely doesn't make sense and is incredibly infuriating to read, though...

Does anyone remember who it was that said something to the effect of:

"Movies were almost perfect. Then they invented sound."
