Just when I think I've heard the stupidest comment ever, my boss comes out with something...else.

The last one thing she said was "Remember when I had those words of praise for you but you weren't at your desk?? You surpassed them today."

I was like whatever

I don't think this has been a stupid discussion, in the least. No one has been flaming each other. It's just a debate. An important one at that. Who cares what thread it's in.

My feelings are exactly the opposite. I came into this thread looking for something fun to read, and what I ended up reading made me feel like I was watching a mother with a screaming child at the supermarket. This is NOT to say that the debate that occurred is anythng remotely like the mother/child scenario, but I really feel that the parties involved should have taken it elsewhere (i.e. flagging comments).
I for one am not comfortable discussing racism when people are obviously getting heated in their debate, however I think that in a situation like this it may very well be warranted - just not out in public because it's human nature to defend ourselves even when we know we're wrong - it is much more productive to have a private discussion with someone if you believe they are seriously doing something wrong than to call them on it in public.

I know that if I had made a statement like the one that caused all this in the first place (i.e. something that is perceived by at least one person as not in compliance with the TOS), I would be much more receptive to an individual pointing out my impropriety privately than calling me on it in the thread.

Some issues are just not meant for public debate in my humble opinion.

I worked at a deli for a while.

Customer: (after placing his order and it started cooking) "Do you take debit cards?"
Me: (standing behind a register with CASH ONLY emblazoned in huge letters on the front) "No, sorry, only cash. There's an ATM around the corner."
Customer: "You guys should really let people know that you only take cash. A lot of people don't carry it around with them."
Me: "There are three CASH ONLY signs that you walked passed. One's on the front door."
Customer: "Whatever." (goes to ATM)
Me: "Next please!"
Customer 2: "I'll have a steak & cheese sub, large fries, and a Coke."
Me: "All right, that'll be $7.50"
Customer 2: "Do you take credit cards?"

These are some nuggets of stupidity...

"What a waste it is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is. "

A cashier at 7-11 once told me that I smelled like coffee. I thought this was strange since she worked at a store that had been brewing coffee for 24 hours a day since the beginning of time.

I just had an experience that I thought fit here. My phone was stolen so I called Verizon and told them that I wanted my service shut off until I could go to a store on Monday morning to get a new phone. They told me that I had to call from the stolen phone to do this.

I said "what part of 'stolen' do you not understand?"

i was at a strip joint one time and this girl told me about a customer she had just offered a dance. he told her "you have a nice body, and i'd buy a dance if you didn't cover it with so many tatoos!" like she's going to go get a cheese grater and remove them all for his $10

So you'd rather have this blanketed (ie. flagged) than discussed in an intelligent manner? Yes let's just ignore racism and it will go away. I mean, really, is there a nice place to talk about this? Of course people are going to get heated, racism is always a heated subject. Still, like I said, no one was flaming each other. I think a lot of good things were put out there.
Or would you have someone make a new thread entitled "racism on the SG boards" so we can continue the discussion?
The orginal post doesn't even warrant a flag.
You don't want this discussed here further and yet you still added your 2 cents.. C'mon now whatever

I had to meet up with a lab partner so we could work on a physics project we had to do, so I asked him what he was doing on Friday.

His reply: Yer Mom

To Midwestern suburbanites, saying "yer mom" to any and everything is the funniest thing on earth. Hence, many of them are stupid.
