Today's young and upwardly mobile professionals have slightly better tastes in music and are more tech saavy than their predecessors in previous generations, but they are still yuppie scum.

MEET the new yuppie: the urban striver who listens to "O.C."-approved indie rock, checks the right blogs to find out about "secret" rock shows, considers white iPod earbuds the ultimate fashion accessory - and is a lawyer with a mortgage and a baby on the way.

Whereas once a yuppie was defined as being part of the establishment - think the '80s corporate drone who wore power suits, watched "thirtysomething" and loved the soundtrack to "The Big Chill" - today's yuppie strenuously identifies with all things counterculture.

It's a crime for lawyers to like good music?

Fuck that. I'd rather be a lawyer that digs Deerhoof than a bloody scenester who's only identity rests on making sure that he's part of a limited elite that likes something.

Fuckers.

As distasteful as I find it, I must admit it's a really clever trick that corporate culture has managed to co-opt and incorporate (pun semi-intended) the state of being opposed to it.

How Foucaultian.

boo hoo.

oh boo hoo I work at starbucks and think I have more of a right to like certain art and fashion than someone successful.

sour grapes people. maybe if you'd have worked harder in school you wouldn't be losers now.

I'm not sure if this is poor 20 somethings hating on their betters, or young 20 somethings hating on their elders, or what.

and WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THE OC? HUH? AND WHATS WRONG WITH MY IPOD?

it sounds like this article is being written by a fat guy who can't hit the 20 year old gash. jeez. is it so wrong to be 20-30 years old and keep with the fucking times these days?

fuck Garden State. i've seen better plots in porn.

and fuck The Shins and the 'comfy music' that is being described in the article. The Shins are boring as all hell.

i like the people who are being interviewed in this article, but i completely disagree about being put in a box just 'cause i keep with the fucking times and happen to have quite a damn eclectic mp3 collection.

if I was asked to interview Frou Frou tomorrow, I would ask them "how does it feel to be the sole reason a certain chick flick did so well?"

My age is gonna show with this posting, but oh well....

The "alternative" culture of the past few years is hardly alternative at all. It's simply mainstream with a few piercings and tats.

Go back 10-15 years ago and you'd see just how "alternative" alternative was, as compared to the mainstream.

Punk WAS punk...no whining and singing sad songs about relationships. It RAGED and CHALLENGED.

At least goth is still rather alternative, but I see a trend to mainstream that also....

Fucking corportations and trend happy consumers.. mad

today cool is a new york dolls aesthetic with a milli vanilli state of mind.
everybody's favorite bands from the 70s, 80s, early 90s, are only cool until their ideals are talked about outside the confines of a lyric sheet.
there's no such thing as anti-establishment. its all pop culture, its all entertainment. its all a wash.

that's all i got to say. skull

I think Punk was the last real revolution. Corporate America has learned to co-opt everything that comes out now. Its horrid in many differant ways. Of course; thas why I just be myself, do my own thing, and if its 'cool', thats nice, and if its not; oh well.

this damn article made me log in from a school computer.

I don't why the term "yuppie" should yield such negative connotations of success. Apparently to maintain credibility among my peers, once I graduate with my bachelors in Marketing I will need to join a struggling firm and be careful not to do any work that might help the company advance to a higher level of income. Is there something wrong with being an "Indie-yuppie"? I don't see why those people interviewed were so afraid of the fact that they were being identified as "indie-yuppies".

I don't understand why the term "yuppie" is used at all, anymore, but whatever, we've yet to think of anything more clever, I suppose.
