The dialogue was awkward, unnatural, and the acting was wooden. There was absolutely no chemistry between Anakin and Padme, bordering on making the audience uncomfortable, and at points even campy. Even Samuel L. Jackson seemed like a bad actor. The only person who seemed immune to Lucas's ruination was Ewan McGregor, likely because he took George's direction, said "Okay", and then did whatever the fuck he wanted to do anyway. Ewan does his best to stroke his beard like Sir Alec Guinness. Anakin's reasons for converting to the dark side seemed contrived and thin, as if it happened because it had to happen for the story, not because it was a logical development for the character. Palpatine was great, until the end where he's reduced to basically cackling like a witch for 20 minutes. The space battles were amazing technically, but had all the excitement of watching someone else play a video game. Even the battle on the Wookie's home planet seemed lifeless.

The last 30 minutes almost saved it, with the crowd-pleasing appearance of Vader for about 10 seconds and the obligatory Yoda fight scene.

All in all, definitely the 4th best Star Wars movie, in this order: Empire, New Hope, Jedi, Revenge, Clones, Phantom Menace.

Tonight, they will.

I thought Episode 1 was great too until I slept on it and saw it again. It takes a while for the blinding nostalgia of that same old John Williams score and those lightsaber battles to wear off. The originals were so great that he can almost coast by merely by tying in emotionally to what we loved about the originals.

I went into it with pretty low expectations and enjoyed myself. Lucas excelled at what he's good at - making intense action scenes - and falters where we all know he fails - dialogue and character direction. Basically I enjoyed the movie save any parts involving Natalie Portman talking to Hayden Christansen. Ewan McGregor does a great job as he has in the past. I have never been a die-hard Star Wars fan, but there were enough parts in it that stirred up childhood memories of seeing the originals for the first time to make it feel like time well spent.

I came back not too long ago and quite enjoyed myself.

Personallly, I thought that Anakin's turn towards the Dark Side was done very well, and by the time Operation 66 rolled around, the film just took an amazing, dark, and surreal turn for me. I'll agree his scenes w/Padme could've been a little better, but the climatic battle w/Obi-Wan was amazing, to say the least. Jar-Jar didn't have a single word of dialog. Everything fit in nicely to A New Hope. R2-D2 is the man. I thought Grievous would be featured more, but I guess that was the role of The Clone Wars.

All in all, the movie just makes me want to dive in headfirst to the rest of the Star Wars universe.

Just got back...

I liked it a lot, and I am not a big 'new' star wars fan.

It was really sad, though.

I loved it. Sure the dialogue and acting not so great, but its Star Wars, not Citizen Caine. It pulled everything all together. Anikan's turn to the dark side was unbelievable!! Yoda kicks ass. I was so afraid it would suck, but it really didn't. I am very happy with how the story played out.

Visually, as was to be expected, it was stunning.

However...as for the film itself...I pose a question.

How good of a movie can one make when the plot and outcome are already known?

I think Lucas and the team did the best they could with what they had to entertain and get done what needed to be...

Awesome movie, shitty dialogue. Ewan McGreggor was the only good actor and the wookies felt like fan service. It was the best of the new Star Wars but not better than any of the original three. They had more personality.

Well, the movie could be Citizen Kane and tell you the ending at the beginning. So theoretically it could be the greatest movie ever made.

As I posted on another forum;

Well. I just walked in about 4 minutes ago, and I'm still reflecting on every aspect of the movie that I hadn't clearly formed an opinion on during the movie.

First off, it was good. It was not amazing, and it did suffer from the major downfalls of the first two, although to a lesser degree.

My BIGGEST problem with the I, II, III trilogy, is the dialogue. The stories are pretty great, but become tainted, sometimes, by crappy one-liners and hardly believable characters. That rings true a bit in ROTS, but definetly not as strongly as within the first two.

Also, the personvs. person fight scenes were pretty fantastic. Fans of the Yoda-Dooku will be having orgasms in their seats by about the third time Yoda whips it out (see: Lightsaber). The dog fight(s), however, were not only very few, but also very lame. I think there was only really one, and it was at the start, and it fucking sucked. My heart almost dropped because of how shitty the first 5 minutes of the movie were.

I am amazed they were able to tell as much story as they did, but it was at a cost. The pace of the movie is very fast. It's not that information is missed or looked-over, but they cut the juicy fatty details that make stories memorable, and it loses a bit of value because of it.

The last big thing I want to touch on, is a very good thing indeed. Despite knowing exactly who was going to die, and what was going to happen; I kept finding myself rooting for people, and hoping that certain people would prevail. So at least it was that immersive.

Anyways, I still need to organize my thoughts. DISCUSS:
