most of my favorite movies were filmed in black and white

a few were made before the technicolor era

some as an artistic decision

and many simply because many of these directors didn't have enough money to afford color

here's a short list

La Dolce Vita - my favorite fellini movie, perhaps because it was the first one i had ever heard of, it has come to symbolize the fellini essence, three hours in length, i like the idea of an epic film from the early 1960's about a man running crazy in the streets of rome

Dr. Strangelove - a kubrick film to watch again and again, in a class by itself

Persona - bergman's strange experimental film about two beautiful, intriguing women and their mysterious relationship with each other

Band of Outsiders - new wave french classic from 1964 featuring beauty anna karina

Seven Samurai - the great samurai epic

The 400 Blows - classic truffaut

Hamlet (Laurence Olivier) - always a fascinating perspective on shakespeare

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? - richard burton and elizabeth taylor

A Streetcar Named Desire(Marlon Brando/Vivien Leigh)

Casablanca - still one of the greatest ever

if you are like me

and appreciate the black and white medium

don't miss any of the above

I suppose one could say that about movies made in the time before color, but for films intentionally made in black and white as opposed to color, it's an interesting artistic choice. Furthermore some of us prefer the aesthetics of black and white. I'm especially interested in the way human faces present in black and white, and the makeup and clothing choices made for black and white films. Dark lipstick, wet glittering eyes. A white suit as opposed to a grey suit makes a huge difference in a black and white film.

Huh. I must have been mistaken. Please disregard. Apparently, Sin City was in color and it sucked. My bad.

One statement is debatable. The other is not.
