Two that haven't been mentioned but fit the bill, one small indie, one hollywood...

'Wilbur Wants To Kill Himself'
and
'The Big Chill'

It's a Wonderful Life.

despite the cornyness of the angel bit and it's whitewashed ending, there's depth and darkness that is truly remarkable.

So I'm doing this movie over the summer about a writer who wants to kill himself, but gets writer's block on the note and can't go through with it. I've been trying to find other movies that deal with the topic of suicide and aren't miserable pieces of garbage. I've got a couple good ones. Harold and Maud, Better off Dead, 2 Days, but the list is kind of short.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Filmkid.

Wait, so are you telling me that your blocked about making a story about a guy who's blocked about killing himself.....

I think that's all the research you need right there.

That's not what I'm saying, but that might make an even better movie. We've got the script, actors, location, equipment, etc. We're pulling the trigger on June 6th, it's just a question of whether or not a movie about suicide can be any good. I wrote the thing, so I'm biased. I was basically just looking for a similar movie so that when people ask me what other movies it's like I can associate it with something they've heard of.

Right now I'd say it's like Before Sunrise but for depressed teenagers instead of over romantic thirty somethings.

Mishima

It's not completely about suicide, but it plays a major part in the story.

Harold and Maude.

Mentioned in the first post, and I don't see how it applies. The character in the movie fakes suicide. It never grapples with the issue and there is never a serious attempt in the whole movie.

True for Harold, but not so true for Maude.....

I finally got my website back up. There's a trailer for Several Ways to Die Trying if any of you are interested in checking it out. It's the movie I mentioned at the beginning of the thread.

I feel like such a bad film buff since I've been trying to think of even more and I really can't come up with any better ones than "Better Off Dead" and "Harold and Maude".

Maude was a fucking retarded bitch. God I wanted to beat that woman senseless. And that's not what suicide is like. Nobody does that shit.

Nonsense! Maude was cool. I was sad when she died, but I was also happy for her because she went out on her own terms and by her choice.

Dead Poet's Society--an excellent film all on its own.

Brave New World--TV movie starring Leonard Nimoy as Mustafa Mond

Things Fall Apart is an excellent book, but I don't know whether there is a movie version--there should be, because it is well-read.

Maude was a fucking self-centered fuckwad who promoted a harmful way of living. She stole cars somehow (they never bother to explain how the fuck she gets into every car and gets the engine running within a second, but hey, who cares, I must be overthinking this very deep movie) and endangered people left and right. But somehow that's supposed to be cute and funny because she's old, right? No. Fuck that. That's a stupid, utterly immature way of living that never looks beyond your own life, and from that perspective it's no wonder that the only person who could possibly stand to be around her is a teenager. There are other people in the world. Act like it. Try to do some good. Maude doesn't do good, she just does whatever seems fun at the time. Great. That's what we need. More people focused on instant gratification. Lovely.

Also, the way suicide was dealt with in that movie was insulting to people who genuinely need help. Harold's attempts (which are not survivable, and again, the movie does not ever bother to explain how he does not die when he sets himself on fire and then later appears from offscreen, Roadrunner-style) are never serious, Maude's actual suicide is never taken seriously. You're happy she went out on her own terms? Yeah, way to go. Same with anyone else who commits suicide. But hey, she did it with a smile on her face so it must be deep and meaningful. Go see how happy you are when someone you love happily kills themselves for no reason. Hey, they went out on their own terms. That'll be such a comfort.

The whole movie just promotes an idea that we should do what feels good and not consider our actions at all, and I simply cannot understand why that is desirable. I'm not saying you can't be an individual and have fun, but there's got to be a happy medium.

True, if Maude was a real person and doing all those things I would think it was pretty damn obnoxious. However, she's not a real person, she's justa character in a movie and therefore she's amusing.

As for the "happy she went out on her own terms", let's just say I'll stick by that no matter what. I don't want to start a huge discussion about it since people start taking it way too personal and it gets ugly, also, this thread really isn't the place for it.

Not a fantastic movie in terms of quality, but still an adaptation of a very thought-provoking play:

Who's Life is it Anyway?
