So I'm doing this movie over the summer about a writer who wants to kill himself, but gets writer's block on the note and can't go through with it. I've been trying to find other movies that deal with the topic of suicide and aren't miserable pieces of garbage. I've got a couple good ones. Harold and Maud, Better off Dead, 2 Days, but the list is kind of short.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Filmkid.

Bulworth is kind of about suicide - in an offbeat sort of way, I suppose.

Actually, it's not ABOUT suicide at all - it's just a device to move the plot.

Nevermind. blush

This film called Julian Poe or The Tears of Julian Poe is good, worth looking for. Its 1997, Director Alan Wade, based on a book Branimir Scepanovic.

I have to recommend "The Best of Youth." There are, from what I read, only four prints making the rounds in the U.S., and it's 6 hours (2 parts, 3 hours each) ... an incredibly beautiful, riveting, not the least padded story about -- among many other things -- the relationship between two brothers in a big Italian family. This is a spoiler, but one of them ends up a suicide. Interesting character study, there.

Edited to add: Suicide + writers = hello. I hope I don't but I once was close.

"The Choice of a Lifetime's director, Nila Bogue, survived a suicide attempt at age 20. She later crisscrossed the country, interviewed 100 men and women and selected six subjects who nearly ended their lives. We meet an older man shattered by the death of his beloved wife, a Mexican-American recovering from the "collective suicide" of gang violence, a young lesbian tortured by guilt over her sexual orientation, a Native American male victim of incest, and an African-American woman who used drugs to escape low self-esteem and the trauma of rape. In candid and revealing terms, each describes the path that led to the brink of suicide, the personal factors which convinced them not to complete the act, and the ways they find to love every new day, including attending support group meetings, creative writing, and a reaffirmation of ethnic spirituality. The film provides no easy answers. All admit to having bad days, but say thoughts of suicide no longer dominate their lives. This helpful, moving, and important documentary is strongly recommended to anyone concerned with this urgent national problem."

This film would be helpful to you I think....In the sense that it is a frank and unbiased look at suicide...

God, suicide is such a dreadful real thing, I for the life of me can't ever figure out why people would want to watch a fictionalized version of it.

And really, Jiatsu Circle isn't really a suicide movie, not in the normal sense...

Girl Interrupted... It gives a semi-realistic view. The acting isn't great, the plot is maybe a 7 out of 10, but the truths it presents startled me.

Also, I agree, Virgin Suicides. Though its less realistic.

I wrote an entire 20 page term-paper on the topic... I have to say Girl Interupted.

I agree, it is horrible. After a screening of the trailers we did for the movie a woman accused me of being insensitive and cruel for making a joke about suicide. It made me really angry, because that's not the point of the film I'm doing.

The script came about as a way of dealing with being a depressed teenager when I was in high school. I was making light of my own experience as a way of dealing with them, because that's how I deal with things.

I hope you don't think I'm trying to make light of or glorify suicide.
