Two women in India, a school teacher and a college student, fell in love. The teacher, 21-year-old Ranu Mishra, was going to be married off by her parents because of the relationship with Neetu Singh, 19. They decided to commit suicide instead of living a life apart. After swallowing sulphas tablets, one has died and the other is in intensive care.

At the time she was found, Ranu had adorned her forehead with sindoor (vermillion - traditionally applied by married women in India) to show her status as Neetu's 'wife'. It was Neetu who had reportedly played a more dominant role in the relationship.
This is the second case to rock Uttar Pradesh in recent times and had sparked off a debate about lesbian rights.
It may be recalled that two girls - Shilpi Gupta and Usha Yadav of Allahabad - had gone to court with the plea that they be allowed to marry each other. The police later arrested them.
Homosexuality continues to be an offence under the Indian Penal Code although many countries in the West have either began accepting same-sex relationships or treat them with far more leniency.

Isn't it also a non-violent protest? I wonder if they face a civilized opppnent?

I'd probably rather try to flee the country than suicide.

Death is so final. Love, even impossible love, unconsumated, unrecognized love, even, perhaps, unrequited love (which this was not) is better kept alive isn't it?

Damn fucking right!
This post overflows with wisdom.

Next time your about to tell someone you love them, ask youself if you would give them the last life vest knowing you'd drown without it.
