Nick Mason is the only member of Pink Floyd who's been there for the whole ride, from the beginning to the present. Through his forty years behind the drums for the legendary band he's witnessed the departures of Syd Barrett and Roger Waters, the arrival of David Gilmour, and even more changes in style, direction, and levels of fame (and infamy) for the group. It's fitting, then, that he should be the first member of the group to write an insider history of the band. His new book, Inside Out: A...

I've read a couple published book reviews, and Amazon comments (notice I put that second- yeah, they are unreliable at times), that said it wasn't a very detailed book, as far as explaining anything controversial (The Big Break-Up, an incident where Waters spat on some fan) or even uncontroversial topics (they met the Beatles once; Mason apparently doesn't say much about it).

Now, I'm not crazy for controversy per se, and I haven't read the book; these are just complaints I've seen a few times. I'm not saying "Mason sucks" or "the book sucks," so nobody get all wonky on me. I think Mason's a pretty underrated drummer (his work in Pompeii and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" particularly [I'd heard once that he had trouble recording the latter due to drugs; I have no idea. Anyway, I enjoy the final product just fine]) and don't claim to know much personally about any of Floyd. He seemed to be open in this interview; I was indeed wondering how the Damned project came together.

It is a brilliant book. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Floyd, or of 60's rock in general. Mason writes with honesty and clarity about a wondrous band in a turbulent time. There's also an abridged audio book available, read by Mason himself.

I want to thank the SG website for scoring this interview. I really appreciate Mr. Daniels questions, and his smoothness in talking with Nick Mason.

This site has some of the best interviews I've read in years. They are always honest, straight to the point, and not mythologized.

Thanks again, SG!
