In a tale straight out of a children's book or a Disney movie, a stray dog in Kenya is being credited with saving an infant.

A newborn baby abandoned in a Kenyan forest was saved by a stray dog who apparently carried her across a busy road and through a barbed wire fence to a shed where the infant was discovered nestled with a litter of puppies, witnesses said Monday.

...

"When the dog picked up the baby in a dirty bag, it came and dropped her behind the wooden building where the dog has its puppies," Mwalimu told The Associated Press Monday.

More proof that dogs are some of the greatest creatures on Earth.

That's awesome. That dog should totally get a reward, like a steak or something. Or at least not have to be a stray anymore.

'Wean'- w-e-a-n.
Is it that difficult, people? Sheesh.
Almost as bad as 'spayded'.

This is reminiscent of the gorilla that saved that little kid a long while ago.

Helpless infants appear to give off a smell that communicates their state. It is understood accross species. There are numerous stories of infant humans that were cared for by wolves, dogs, chimpanzees, gorillas, etc. Humans are not the only benefactors of this phenomenon. Other cross-species care of newborns have been reported. I'm not aware of any research, though. Its all just anecdotal. I recently heard they discovered the mammal that was the anscestor of all mammals today. My thought was, "aww, she was probably quite a sweety." I bet mammals invented snuggling.

I just want to know how, when they found the baby, supposedly two days after its abandonment, and nobody witnessed the abandonment, they ascertained the whole "dog finding and carrying baby across busy street" bit.

I surmised that the plastic bag was left at the desertion site, since the article states that the baby was found in only the filthy t-shirt.

Several media professionals did witness the dog carrying the child across the busy street. However, said media, being bound by reality-rules non-interference, could do nothing save watch and wait for a ratings bonanza that would (hopefully) arrive before sweeps.

I realize it wasn't a true dingo, but the headline wouldn't be the same if I wrote "Dog Saves Baby".

I apologize if I offended any Aussie dingo lovers by giving their feral dogs a good name.
