In the 1950s (and before that time) American T.V. shows would not dare to show a married couple sleeping in the same bed...oooh taboo.

Did they do the same in the movies? (I can't really recall any 50s era movies I've seen right now). I'm assuming that in real homes parents slept together, not just in the sense that they had sex but that they shared a bed. So in homes with a married couple and children, the children must have known that their parents slept in the same bed. I wonder if they thought it was odd that Lucy and Ricky did not.

So in times before television they had theater. Were seperate beds used in plays as well?

educate me!

I think double twin beds were pretty common in real people's homes in those days, but I wasn't actually born until 1978, so it's hard for me to answer with any certainty.

I was thinking about that too...so then what about the large beds that royalty slept in? Was that just a matter of class?

when I was young I was a big fan of I love Lucy. I rember when Lucy became pregnant I wondered to myself, "how? they don't sleep in the same bed!"

I'm assuming you just fuck on the covers.

That might stain the duvet cover though.

ok...here is a little known secret.

people my parents' age often do not sleep in the same bed.
often times this is due to one person snoring, etc.

it's true. my older family (50s, I know that's not terribly old) and all of their friends the same age, regularly do not sleep in the same bed.
it's not talked about. like ever. because they don't like to be seen as "gasp" their parents.

Were seperate beds the "norm" then?

No, people mostly slept together, as far as I know. Both sets of my grandparents did. Of course, I have ten biological aunts and uncles.

Both sets of my grandparents slept in seperate beds too, but I only have 3 or so biological aunts and uncles... my grandparents were seriously lacking in the getting busy department.

I don't think it goes that far back in time. I know that during the 1920s and 1930s movie makers got pretty racy with content, up to and including full frontal nudity and depictions of what were supposed to be Satanic rituals. It was during that time that committees were formed to watch over decency standards in the media.

The double twin bed thing seems to be unique to the 50s, much like aqua kitchen appliances and rocket ship lamps. I do know one married couple who are only in their twenties and sleep in separate beds for reasons much like the ones mentioned earlier in the thread. They work opposite schedules and he snores like crazy.

My parents (in their 70s now) have always slept in the same bed. They were married in the 50's. They are about as 'normal' as anyone could be. The twin beds thing (sometimes called 'hollywood' beds) was more for show on the tee-vee. Another reason to think of tv as an utter distortion of a lie of a hallucination.

That might be true...I lived with my grandparents when I was really young and I slept on one of a pair of really old twin beds.
