Two brothers are sending the entire 42nd Infantry Division a big care package —an estimated 23 tons of salami. They got the idea from their father.

The inspiration for the project was twofold. The Brummers' 82-year-old father, Sam -- who owned the 95-year-old deli before his sons took over its operation -- fought in World War II in France and described receiving a salami in the mail about every month and carrying it around in his backpack for weeks.

The first shipment of 2 tons of salami (about 2,000 individual salamis) shipped out yesterday.

People from around the area are pitching in to help.

All have been purchased with donations of $10 per salami, including a 13-year-old girl who donated $1,000 from her bat mitzvah money.

Does that mean he didn't actually like it enough to eat it?

I was about to ask that;

Perfect war-time food

"There's nothing like the scene of soldiers getting a package and turning to share it with their friends and fellow soldiers,"

So they'll have to be careful if it isn't kosher or halal.

Naw. Salami just keep and keeps.

From the article:

"They're already salted and smoked. Drying is another form of preserving," Michael Brummer said. "Once they dry, they'll be digging them up like they dig up dinosaur bones. That's what makes them so great."

What gets me is that little girl who donated $1,000 from her bat mitzvah. I'm thinking I'd have to have one of those (for boys......that are 23... biggrin )
