Five years ago, the three-month-old daughter of Tonya Vasilev died in a fire in her home. No foul play was suspected at the time; she said that she had simply left the child in a carrier in the laundry room while she went to check on one of her other children, returning when she noticed the smoke. Now, though, that case is being opened again for a fresh look.

The reason? Vasilev was just charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her nine-year-old son and three-year-old daughter -- both of whom were stabbed over 200 times.

Investigators believe she was at home Wednesday night when Christian and Gracie Vasilev were killed. The children's father and a friend who had been living with the family discovered the bloody scene when they arrived home that evening.

Police found the boy lying just inside the front door and carried him outside, where they tried in vain to resuscitate him, said Hoffman Estates Police Lt. Rich Russo.

The little girl and the children's mother were both upstairs. The girl was dead, and her mother had what appeared to be minor cuts on her hands. Police recovered several knives believed to have been used to kill the children.

"It really doesn't get much worse than this," said Russo, who would not discuss a possible motive for the killings.

The autopsy results suggest that the children had tried to fight off the attack. Even more disturbing, however, are those elements of the story coming from Vasilev's statements and the discussions of possible motives in the killings:

Investigators believe 3-year-old Gracie was attacked first, around 8:30 p.m., and then her mother brought her to the second floor, where her older brother, Christian, was watching television, the source said, citing the mother's statement to police.

"The boy looks up, sees his sister all bloody, and asked the mother, "What's going on? . . . The mother then attacked the boy. The boy runs from her, flees to the first floor, where she catches up with him, and she then alternates between attacking the boy and the girl.''

[...]

Nikolai [Vasilev, the father], 36, had recently decided to leave the Des Plaines church to start his own congregation, said Stan Tanev, pastor of the Des Plaines church. The split was amicable and because of a difference in styles, including that Nikolai was going to preach in English, Tanev said.

Investigators were looking at this as a possible motive in the attacks, the source said.

"The motive is bizarre. . . . The mother feared people in the new religion were going to sexually molest these children,'' the source said.

According to Tanev, neither he nor anyone else in his parish believes that Vasilev committed the crime.

Tanev said Tonya's family was from North Carolina. Her calling, he said, was to minister to children.

[...]

A family friend said there had been some recent strains in the family, largely because of a college classmate of Nikolai's who had been staying at the house.

Tanev said he was not aware of any problems. He said Tonya was the only member of the church who did not speak Bulgarian, which might have made her feel lonely. But neither he nor other members believe she killed her children.

"I liked her from the first moment,'' the woman said. "She was full of life.''

Is there enough room on a 3-year-old to stab them 200 times?? Or a 9-year-old for that matter... puke

I'd say "I hope it was quick", but it really doesn't sound like it possibly could've been.. and I'd say "I hope she didn't do it" but I'm not sure if that would make it much better.. frown

Those must have been some tough kids to be fighting off 200 stab wounds. She must have been using a pair of tiny sewing scissors or something.

Uh, yeah, I'm pretty sure they weren't fighting back throughout the duration of the stabbing.

I figured that, I just meant that they must have been pretty resilient to put up any fight, let alone the one that the story made it sound like. Unless the mom was using tiny scissors, then I can see how it would take a while.
