Scenic Carpenter at a university. I don't think they would really care how I look. As long as it isn't anything offensive. I already told them if I get down to 220 pounds I was shaving my head into a mohawk. they didn't care
Pretty much anything in technical theatre wouldn't be a problem. i have seen all kinds of people.

I am a mommy and a scientist. I keep my tattoos and peircings to myself and very few people know i have them. most people think i only have one because it;s the only one that is obviously visible. People in my field don't care much, especially at my company. I am a good chemist, so when people get their first impressions of of their systems, they know I know what I am talking about. I do, however, get looks as a mommy. Is it really surprising to see a smart and cute child with a tattooed mom?

Yup. We've got all sorts of freaky people in theater. My pink hair is not a problem.

It is possible to have an outstanding career regardless of your outward appearance provided you offer expertise that goes above and beyond what anyone else can provide. The trick is being able to prove your value, and this takes a great deal of dedication.

I started with my current company, a top environmental and engineering consulting company, 7 years ago. Being of the goth persuasion, I had 11 earrings, a floppy purplish black mohawk and didn't always get all the eyeliner off before I showed up to work the next morning. They put up with it because I worked my ass off to make sure they had no excuse to question my integrity. Any time an opportunity cropped up, I jumped at it and became the expert. If I said I would get something done, you better believe it was on time, if not 5 minutes early.

These days I am a senior manager (youngest in the company), run a highly profitable division and love what I do. My entire staff is made up of closet freaks and surfers and I love them for it. (Actually, it has almost become an expectation for my group) Walking within 20 feet of my office means you will be assaulted with whatever music I have decided will make up the soundtrack of my life that day . . . and I love that it makes all the pole-up-their-ass engineers around me uncomfortable.

I no longer color my hair and only occasionally come to the office with earrings in, but it is because my appearance has matured with my level of responsibility. If you think this means I wear white button-ups with ties . . . SHAME ON YOU!!! I admit that appearance carries weight in the corporate world, so I end up in finely tailored suits, dark tone shirts and all the finer details (because every classy freak knows it's all about the details).

So, it is possible to make an excellent living and still be a freak, but you will have to work harder to get it than your average lemming.

I'm unemployed although I technically run a production company. No one I've ever run into in film or tv seems to mind any kind of body mods although mine aren't visable, I've had discussions with people about them and people usually think they're cool.

Body piercer......your encouraged to look like we do and it's tons of fun....really though.

Not necessarily (the encouragement part)...I worked in a piercing shop as a full-time sales associate and I was forced to put retainers in my cheek piercings because they were "too extreme." But I was still given the job.

I've also worked a lot in medical records filing/alphabetizing and insurance verification, these are both done behind the scenes or over the phone, so as long as I stayed out of the way, looks really didn't play into it much. I've interned in the field in which I'm planning my career (Japanese media publication in the states) and they didn't have a problem with the way I look so long as I was a good worker biggrin
