I do this a lot. Doing it right now, in fact.

Now before you get the wrong idea and think I'm whining and looking for sympathy, let the record show that I'm not looking for a virtual pity fuck. I'm just wondering how many of you do it, too.

Also, I'm on antidepressants, which clearly state on their label that I should not imbue alcohol while taking the pills. Yet even a good, rip-roaring drunk doesn't seem to affect me in any adverse way. Is there something I'm missing?

I can't drink when I'm depressed. The thought of doing it makes be start to feel sick. But it would be nice to just pass out when I'm depressed.

I never drank when I was depressed. For me it was always celebratory. But then I lived with a girl who obviously drank to mask her severe sadness. She would pretend she was having fun, but it was evident she was drinking so much to stop the hurt. From that point I associated alcohol with her, and I stopped drinking. I haven't gotten drunk since I moved out (that wasn't the reason I moved out though).

I sometimes drink when I'm depressed but I find that all too often it puts me into an even blacker mood than I was in before.

Yes, I think it is indeed harmful. The thing is that antidepressants have a cummulative effect that, of course, builds over time. That is why most people do not feel the effects of antidepressants for several weeks. By consuming the alcohol, you are actually affecting the neurotransmitters (and their receptors) that your medication works on and therefore reducing its overall efficacy over time. You wouldn't just "notice it one night."

I can honestly say I've never once gotten behind the wheel after having so much as one drink. I'm just not wired that way. I'm at home right now. Just me and my friends Hops and Barley.

depends on the antidepressant actually.

venlafexine shouldn't have any effects to alcohol, though it's still not recommended.
and not true in my case.

wait. nevermind. you obviously know more about it than me. I was talking about the drug interaction, not the receptors and such.

I drink when I'm depressed. Specifically, I do shots of gin when I'm feeling particularly down.

Oddly, I don't drink at parties or at clubs. I have more fun watching others get drunk and making fools of themselves.

But then I lived with a girl who obviously drank to mask her severe sadness. She would pretend she was having fun, but it was evident she was drinking so much to stop the hurt. I'm not that bad. I rarely drink at all, honestly. But I've noticed that I tend to drink only when I'm really, really down.

I'm afraid that if I did drink when I was depressed I would make my self feel worse than I was. I do that well enough by myself because I just sit and dwell on everything wrong in my life. I don't even keep beer or anything in the house. Just to be safe.

alcohol washes out the benefits of antidepressants. I'm on Paxil for anxiety, but originally Paxil was an antidepresant. I would say don't drink. meditation and lots of coffeee. i am not a doctor. but you should never mix prescription drugs with booze...

Hmm. I find it tends to kill the pain. Or at least numb it long enough for me to get a good sleep.

That's another thing - no matter how black my mood, I almost always feel better after a good night's sleep.

I always feel better after a good night sleep. But for a while know I haven't gotten much sleep. Seems like maybe one day a week I get any restful sleep.

I've been on Celexa for a little over 2 years now. And I've done the depression drink thing about a half-dozen times or so over that period of time. Maybe my general aversion to alcohol in general makes it so I don't notice any real effect?

To use a cliche'd quote, "I feel your pain." blackeyed
