Facing lagging sales as well as persistant urban legends that the word "chicken" was dropped from the brand name because the meat sold at the chain comes from mutant genetically bred animals, not chickens, Yum! Brands has opened a new KFC restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky called: Kentucky Fried Chicken.

In addition to using the "Kentucky Fried Chicken" name, the new Louisville restaurant has a free digital jukebox, low-set tables with ottomans and features a younger, apron-clad image of the chain's founder, Colonel Sanders.

The menu also has been completely revamped to include bowls of chicken and mashed potatoes or chicken and rice, sausage bowls, collard greens, buttermilk popcorn shrimp and sweet potato pie -- items not usually associated with fast food.

The 50 stores opening with new looks this year will be remodels of existing restaurants, KFC spokeswoman Bonnie Warschauer said.

Though specific locations have not been decided, the restaurants will be in both urban and suburban neighborhoods and are expected to combine the best aspects of the new Louisville store with those of a new store in an urban community in Washington, D.C., she added.

The Washington store, which features the Kentucky Fried Chicken name as well as a redesigned bucket for serving chicken, has boosted business by 20 percent, KFC said.

The original switch to the KFC name was to remove the word "fried" in hopes of appealing to health-conscious customers. It has now occured to them that anyone who is "health-conscious" knows that even though it's called KFC, it's still greasy, nasty-ass chicken.

Or is it chicken at all?

I thought it was changed from Kentucky fried chicken to KFC because they couldnt actually say it was Kentucky fried. Making the store IN Kentucky with the full name seems go along with that theory.

Now I want a bowl of chicken & mashed potatoes. That sounds pretty good.

All I know about KFC is that a meal of it's chicken is the best laxative in the world. I'll eat there a couple of times a year, usually on a road trip and it never fails. I think one of the "herbs&spices" is actually ex-lax.

As I understand it, there were two big motivations: first, get the word "fried" out of the name, and, secondly, the thought that "KFC" sounded hipper than "Kentucky Fried Chicken." Oh, and, also, there was thought of expanding the menu out past chicken, so calling it "Chicken" would hurt that. (It's the same reason Boston Chicken became Boston Market.)

It hasn't quite worked.

I thought they were required to take "chicken" out of their name because they couldn't say that a four-beasted foul with no beak and no feet was really a chicken.

People still think KFC's chicken is genetically created in a lab? Check it.

That being said, even though it's real chicken, it's still fucking nasty.

I like chicken. With hot sauce. But KFC is ok. The best is a church's fried chicken. The kind sold to raise money. Mmmm with blackeyed peas. I miss home.

As the author of this article, I'd like to point out that the "spelling correction" of the title of my article ruins the reference it makes. It should be "Keep It Greasey So It Goes Down Easy".

I'll leave it to you to figure out the reference.

Yeah, but sometimes KFC's all a person has. No Popeye's and I've never even HEARD of Church's. The only local place that does fried chicken tastes like ass, though their tenders are good.

And as for Pamela Anderson, I'll stop eating KFC when you stop acting and pretty much just stop talking. wink
