i'm working on a animation for school at the moment, normally i animate all kinds of silly stuff like goblins and weird creatures, but since there's not actually a big market for goblin creatures im working on learning some more realistic human animation as well.

i'm planning a animation where a character comes walking down the stairs, sneaks past the ticket booth, sits down to wait for the subway and then startles and runs after the subway train when it passes her and stops somewhere else.

anyway this is where i need your help, my character is a punk girl, shaved head, big boots, plaid schoolgirl skirt maybe some chains and stuff, vaguely tank girl inspired.
but i want the animation to be a lot less energetic than tankgirl, sort of melancholy and tired like going home after a long day of work.

i'm going to keep the legs pretty close together, putting one foot in front of the other to keep a bit of that femine feel to the walk, maybe hang the head slightly because she's tired.
anyway i haven't had much chance to study girls walks so when you (girls please) walk normally with nothing in your hands, where do you put your hands?

do you keep them nearly still when you walk or are you swinging them around like a man for example.
personally my thoughts would be that girls don't swing their arms out as far as men, instead with every step the hand goes slightly in front of the body instead of outward like a man does.
take a few steps around the room, think about what your body is doing, hopefully i made things clear and i can get some good answers.

Swinging arms exude confidence (or so I was told when I used to do catwalk stuff), but it does require bigger steps. So if your character's taking smaller steps, only a slight swing is needed, but don't hold them still, that looks stiff and awkward. If not holding anything, the hands should be poised relaxed, with the fingers positioned kind of like they're holding a cigarette...does that make any sense?

And for extra sexiness, cross the feet slightly when stepping forward, it gives a hip wiggle...smile

nope. some girls walk with their knees apart (like a guy would, but guys have a penis so they have an excuse) and it is completely un-sexy.

knees close, hips sway a bit. not too much, or she'll look like a model practising a runway walk. but some. girls who walk with their legs apart look macho and gross. I work as a dancer, so I notice these things in my coworkers. there are two girls in my club who walk like that, and everyone who works there comments about being turned off by these girls. they usually can't place why. fortunately, the girls can walk up behind customers, or sit down with them so they arent judged on their walks alone. wink
