I found a few sort of obscure movies on blockbuster online that I didn't find on netflix as well, which is sort of suprising. Blockbuster online is also a bit less expensive and offers free in-store rental coupons.

1. Do you have a NetFlix or Blockbuster (internet) account?

yes : move on to question 2.
no: thank you for your time.

2. Would you mind participating in a faux fo-focus group?

I'm in a marketing research class and our semester project is to conduct a focus group. As you can guess my group's topic is NetFlix and Blockbuster's new battle for internet DVD rentals. So if you are signed up for either, or used to be and could maybe help me out I would appreciate it so much!

I don't have a definite date or time for the focus group yet. I still need to speak with my other group members about that.

Thanks guys!

anyone in San Francisco (or surrounding areas) want to help me out?

i tried both netflix and blockbuster's (online) free trials. netflix was WAY better. it costs a little bit more, but with netflix it takes about 3 days for the -total- exchange to get my dvds. that means if i put one of their dvds in my mailbox on monday, it gets to them on tuesday.. they mail the next one out ON TUESDAY the same day they get the old one, and i get my new dvd on wednesday. with blockbuster it took them about 2 to 3 days longer than netflix and one movie took nearly a week. with netflix it doesnt seem to matter what i order.. new release.. older movie.. they all get here at that same rate. i like it because i never have to worry about walking around the video store for an hour looking for something, or them not having part of a series. i watch ALOT of series with netflix, quateen, queer as folk, six feet under, family guy, space ghost, etc. since i can have 3 dvds out at a time i never seem to run out, because i'll mail one off while i still have 2 left and by the time my next one gets here i'm just finishing the other ones. i also like the netflix site way better than blockbuster's. the search features are better and once you rate movies you've seen (even old ones you didnt rent from them) you get recommendations, and i've actually found some interesting movies i didnt know about that way.

wow. i can't believe i wrote that much about it, lol. i just hate going to stores. right now i'm waiting for a pizza i ordered online to get here, so i can watch some queer as folk i got from netflix.

i've found every single obscure thing i've searched for on netflix, which i didnt on blockbuster. i know someone else in this thread said the opposite. alot of things i looked for on blockbuster were currently "unavailble". i rented the old todd haynes movie "poison" from netflix, and i couldnt find that anywhere. also, alot of foreign movies. i would say do what i did and try the trail periods for each if you arent sure. just remember to cancel the one you didnt like.

i havent had cable since season 2 started, so i started renting them all, netflix made that alot easier. the only problem was it took season 4 FOREVER to come out on DVD. i kept having to yell at a friend of mine with cable when she'd start talking about season 4.

Do they hold the money? As in, does it authorize payment on your card before it charges you? Per instance:

Say you have 100 bucks in your bank account. You sign up for netflix free trial and it authorizes 20 bucks. Your account still show's that you've got 100 bucks but only 80 of it is available. Then when you don't cancel, it takes out the 20 bucks.

Is that any sense it makes?

heh.

Just a note, for both Netflix and Blockbuster your location is THE factor on how long things take. We are a 2-3 day zone for both so that did not affect our decision. (we also did trials for both, I recommend trying that.)

netflix has had everything i've ever looked for, and their web interface is really, really well done. you could spend hours discovering new titles and genres of film that you never even considered. the service is flawless, too.

also, blockbuster edits movies they carry, which is completely offensive.

Ok-

This has been helpful. There are a ton of movies we don't get out here in the old midwest at the theatre and I would like to watch them. Our rental place doesn't even carry the exorcist. whatever
