During a student-teacher high school basketball game in Macon, Georgia, teacher Greg Dougherty walked onto the basketball court wearing “an exaggerated, Afro-style wig with brownish makeup covering his face and arms.” A student also appeared in “blackface.” He has since resigned after facing a renewed teaching contract that had him suspended without pay and “barred from school property and events for the rest of the current academic year.”

"I offer an apology to anybody I offended," Dougherty said Thursday. "My intent was never to offend. I was trying to generate laughter. It was poor judgment and will never happen again."

In 1999 Dougherty was accused of making sexually inappropriate comments to female students, Bibb County Schools Superintendent Sharon Patterson said.

"There's a pattern now of judgment issues," Patterson said.

You can continue to see him as a DJ at weddings and office parties.

Though imagine being at that game. It would be pretty hilarious.

A judge from my hometown went to a halloween party in blackface, an afro, and a jail outfit. A fucking judge. It amazes me how idiotic "smart" people can be.

Excuse me for my liberal upbringing, but I don't even understand what was supposed to be funny about it.
Was it like "look at me, I'm black!"? Was that the humor?

On a side note, anyone know the name of the teen comedy dealing with a white guy dressing in black face so he could stay in school via minority scholarship?

"I was trying to generate laughter?"

What the fuck?

As in "Ha ha! Look at me, I'm black?"

That guy needs a serious slap in the head.

I didn't even know there was a problem with blackface, until a year or two ago. I always liked the way it looked and enjoyed some cartoons with characters in blackface as a child. I never associated blackface, with black people.

I guess I was just use to seeing thing like that, being from New Orleans. Zulu

'Blackface' is always a bad idea, but I worry that there's no acceptable way for someone to dress like a black person. If I want to go as Bubb Rubb for Halloween: do I wear a bag on my head and hand out disclaimers on flyers before exposing myself? There's no culturally acceptable way. Either I perfect my whoo whoo or wear a nametag.

I think the afro thing would've been funny on it's own, like in the movie Fletch, but he carried it too far.

Kind of reminds me when Ted Danson was dating Whoopi Goldberg, and he went to some public appearance with her in blackface.

WHY? It's not funny, and what sort of statement are you trying to make by going in blackface?

Whoopi is black, get it?

She has also been known to enjoy watermelon.

Specifically, it was a Friar's Club roast

My friend related a story to me where blackface seemed like a good idea, even a funny one.

There was this couple. Black guy, white girl. White girl wore blackface to the party and black guy wore whiteface. It was cute.

In fairness, Whoopi was dating him at the time and took full credit for that. She had assured him it'd be fine and people would laugh. He wound up getting admonished by Bobcat Goldthwait. Not a high point in anyone's career.

Yeah, there was this movie a while back that sort of made the practice offensive.
