You pick up the new album Leviathan by Atlanta, Georgia's Mastodon, and you notice a couple of things: here you've got cover art straight from the Molly Hatchet playbook, a concept album about Moby Dick, and nary a curse word or satanic invocation in sight. Don't expect Leviathan to be heavy? Well, you'd be wrong, motherfucker, because Mastodon just might be the heaviest band on the planet right now, and Leviathan is a masterpiece of artful, thoughtful, devastating metal. Every member of Mastodon...

Some typos in the interview...

Neil Peart is the drummer of Rush and the Phil Collins song is called "Sussudio", so I guess the quote should be "Su-Sussudio" as the chorus goes.

Other than that, great interview.

I always love to hear what musicians are fans of, what inspires them. 'Leviathan' is a bloody good album, and the cover artwork is just stunning. I hope to catch Mastodon at Donington, can't wait.

Well, that's one solution. I was just going to say "Thanks for catching those for me." shocked

I actually saw the "Sussudio" one about .02 secs before it submitted.

Tack on one more vote for *EVERYONE NEEDS TO SEE THIS BAND LIVE*

I had both the cds and was one of the people who cherished Remission but had trouble sitting through Leviathan... until i saw them live. Wow. It really brought the cd to life for me. This band deserves to be huge.

Damn them for being on Ozzfest. If they hadn't been, i wouldn't have a reason to go. Aside from KSE of course.

Wonderful, enlightening interview.

Brann is a brilliant man and someone to definitely look up to. Shit. I knew there was a reason I loved him so much, a reason other than his impeccable drumming, I mean.

Here's a guy unafraid to be labeled "uncool" by proclaiming his great admiration for early-era Genesis. Phil Collins is, indeed, one of the greatest drummers of all time, without a doubt. But you can always tell you the uninformed and the uninitiated are when they laugh and say "Sussudio?"

I just saw Masotodon in Pomona, and asked to Brann to sign my "Leviathan" disc for me, which he did. I also, of course, spoke the absolute truth to him when I told him that he was "The absolute best fucking drummer in the world."

Of course, I also saw Mastodon open for Slayer back in December and Brann, looking at me, tossed a stick right my way. I fought all the way to the ground for it, clutching it in my arms.

Thank you, SG, for confirming that I did that with good reason. Brann is definitely an official hero of mine, and also the Mt. Everest of drummers, who, as a drummer myself, I hope to get at least somewhat close to equalling someday.
