I think he's got a friend that's going to open a tattoo studio, and he's just looking for suggestions on places where it would be most conducive to business.

Yeah, a mall is not a good idea. A casino on the other hand is a great idea. But I'm pretty sure it's been done already.

come to think of it... ice cream. whenever i see people eating ice cream, i want to tattoo them. start by serving the ice cream, then work in the tattoo schtick.

If I could understand what you were saying I'd give you my input as a proffesional tattoo artist. Reading that post was like listening to a football game on AM radio driving through the mountains of Tennessee on a rainy day, I think I missed a couple important words

and if you said what i think you did, there's no way your friend will get approval to open a body art establishment in a mall, city and health codes are way too uptight for that.

What sort of town do you live in? Is it a decent sized city? I would think you'd have the most success in a storefront in an arts/commercial district.

The Hart and Huntington Tattoo Company is in the Palms Casino... I'm sure a casino isn't much cleaner than a mall, depending on what mall of course. They have piercing places in malls, so I'm sure as long as it was kept tattoo parlor clean it shouldn't be a problem.

I for one would not EVER get tattooed at the mall. If, y'know, I was gonna get tattooed.

That's just slightly skeezy.

If your mall allows such a thing go for it.

It may be cheaper to get a stand alone store or plaza shop.

I would imagine mall rent to be pretty high.

would this be an actual store or a kiosk?

oh, nevermind. No dont open one in the mall. the mall closes at like 9. And mallrats suck and they would be lurking and coming in and knocking over your dvd's and stealing candy and fighting and crying and spilling stuff. Ok, the mall sucks in general. not that i would know

Strangely enough, a buddy of mine just started at a shop in a mall this month. Anywhere else and I would have called him a madman. But this shop is in Boston, where apparently they only have a handful of shops to begin with. As a result he's making 3 bills a week, working part time. I'm sure you we're all dying to know.

Three dollars? I think he's in the wrong business.

yeah but u forget that the people in charge of giving the ok for that shit look at tattooists as the scum of society for the most part. and its not an issue of the mall's cleanlinees for the tattoo shop, its the tattoo shop's cleanliness for the mall. AND the ear peircing they do at jewelry stores is different from the nipple and genital peircings they do in a shop. odds are it won't fly.

Don't move to Texas..65% of customers want tribals and butterflies.

Don't get me wrong..I don't hate tribals and butterflies. I'm just sure it gets annoying to the artist.

Texas isn't the only state....province....country that tribal and butterflies are popular in. They actually do this crazy thing called "Pay the Bills".

In terms of the original posters question: where is a good place to open up shop: It depends on the demographics of the location in question, the saturation of shops in that area, the quality of work you'll be putting out. Far too many factors to give a direct answer to, and one that ought to require some actual research on the part of the shop OWNER himself, that doesn't involve casually asking people on a porn site.

I fully agree with this! I have a few tattoos and i would never had them done in a mall. I like a place with a little character and that sets itself off. Also, the whole mallrat thing would be way too much. You would have jr. high kids in all the time just looking at the stuff and that would be enough to scare off any legit customers. I live in bible belt mid-west and trust me parents would make sure it didn't happen. Anyway, I really think an art/commercial district is the way to go.

P.S. If anyone is close to Columbia, MO check out Spider at Dream Catcher gallery. He's an awesome artist and the store he works out of rocks.

As a good friend of mine, who's a tattoo artist, once said "Sometimes it's not about art, its about commerce."
