People don't seem to know what it is. I don't know much about it myself, but I do know this one thing that the 87,456 people who like to forward junk mail to me don't:

When you are emailing groups of people who may not already know each other you are supposed to put your own email address in the "to" field and BCC everyone else. You are also supposed to delete all the email addresses from the body of any email you forward. These steps ensure privacy and reduce the amount of additional junk mail people are likely to receive.

Please, if you don't already do this, start. And share your own tips that people seem to often ignore here. I know I could probably learn some things.

I would like it if when my friends send me pictures they would at least have the courtesy to write "Don't open at work" in the message box. You know. Because some pictures you just don't want to open at work.

Oh, Hey Clara! What's goin on with all the sillies posted all over the place? What happened to Spring Clearing? I'm off for a day and I get back on and it's all craziness??!! Wha happen? shocked

Anyone sending me an email that they're also sending to more than 2 people had better have my permission to do so. Families and pals is okay, but anyone else mad mad mad

1) Don't ever ever ever forward junk mail to me. I've seen it. And if I haven't seen it I'm not going to think it's funny if it arrives in my email thinger.

2) Snip out all the cruft, just leave the points you're replying to.

3) I prefer it if people make their points inline, or all underneath. For email I can tolerate "top-posting / bottom quoting", just about, but it sets my teeth on edge.

Also, for the love of Ghod, pictures do not have to be 3 megabytes and 1024*something-else-equally-huge.

When I get emails from 1 friend who has fwded the email to our group of friends, and I get the same email back from everyone else. That drives me nuts.

Please: Never ever forward on something that is a virus warning. They're almost always hoaxes, and if they're not then my AN (which updates itself) will be updated.

Also, check Snopes.com before forwarding on warnings about, well, whatever.

I don't care how much you enjoy using capital letters, it's considered shouting and many people find it annoying. Stop.

...and when replying to someone's mass e-mail, make sure it's only being sent to the original sender, and not everyone on the original mail list. My university account fills up every day with replies to teacher e-mails from fellow students.

Don't send those automatic return receipt requested things. They are obnoxious.

Don't flag all your e-mail as "importance: high". It doesn't affect how quickly the thing moves and makes the sender appear clueless.

Never reply to a digest email.
If you absolutely have to, then edit the irrelevant stuff out, and change the title/subject.

Stick to text for email. HTML etc. ought to go as an attachment.

Hmm, when I quote on boards such as this, I put my reply underneath. When I quote in email I put my reply above. I'd never noticed that before. Now I'll notice it everytime. Great.

There are two things that bug me. Multi-megabyte attachments I'm not expecting or any attachment I can't open. If it's a multi-megabyte attachment that I'm not expecting AND I can't open it? Well... fuck you mister. Fuck you and your dog. (Not aimed at anyone.)

Ok, I'll be more clear. Obscure file formats I've never heard of and wouldn't know how to open. Better? Besides .pif and .exe files won't do shit to a Mac wink

The only thing I hate more than the addresses being visible is that jackass who replies to all instead of just the sender. Usually with personal shit that means nothing whatsoever to the rest of us poor bastards.
