I am willing to do research, but I want personal opinions.

Do any of you have websites? Are you pleased with your host? I'm looking for a host for a fairly low-key website. It's not going to be anything fancy. I am also cheap.

Personal anecdotes regarding hosts to avoid are also welcome.

I use vervehosting. $5/month. Does everything I need it to do. Have used them for http://www.bluevalentine.net for years now. All customer service questions are answered in less than 24 hours, and normally, less than 3 hours.

i'd say look around for hosting with a local ISP or hosting company. the benefits of having your stuff hosted by a smaller, local company far outweigh any discount you'd get by signing up for a personal account with a major webhost.

i say this mainly because local companies are accountable to smaller clients. you can walk into their office and kick the hardware and/or people there if you have to, and you're more likely to get actual help from the email/phone support lines.

the absolute best option is to weasel webspace out of a friend with a box colo'd somewhere, because it's generally free and a friend is less likely to sue you for dropkicking them during service outages. if that's not an option though, definitely go small and go local.

I use: Powweb

5gig a day data transfer rate for 7.77$. 2gigs of storage space. You can also register a domain name with them and have your domain and site up and running in a couple of days.

I've been with them for a year now and i'm very satisfied with them.

I needed a lot of transfer rate cuz my site brings in 60 000 unique vistors a month. that roughly 500megs of data transfer a day. Just to give you an idea of the vistor to bandwidth ratio.

I used to be with doteasy. Really good hosting too. i left because i needed more bandwidth. I think they still offer free hosting with 1 gig a month data transfer if you register a domain name with them.

I'm using Yahoo hosting for curtandmandy.com. I've been with them for two years with no problems at all. At 11 bucks a month it's not a bad deal. That said, If it's a music site I'd go with Hostbaby. It's 20/mo but only 10 bucks for the domain registration. You get unlimited email addresses and you can sell your CDs at the sister site CDBaby.

Yeah, I host for a bunch of friends. It's also easier when they inevitably have problems for me to go into my own servers and fix it than have to call some tech support person for them. The other benefit is that you'll usually get a better deal; I usually offer unlimited space and bandwidth within reason (like, don't kill the box and you're ok) whereas you'll get lots of annoying limitations with some hosting company.

After wasting what would amount to four years worth of SG for a year of hosting over at Pair I switched over to sh3lls.net. Few bucks a month... cpanel... I'm more than happy with them.

...too bad I can't get a refund for the remaining 6 months of pair... whatever

Jeremy works at Dreamhost. That's probably who I'll go with once I get mine up.

I asked the guy who works/owns Camden.net (my ISP at the time) "How much would it be, per month, to host a very small, personal website?" He came back with $20/50M and I almost choked on my gum.

My friend Eric runs http://www.serverselect.net which is an amazing webhost company. If there are any problems, which is rare, he always deals with everything straight away. And he always answers everyone's emails quickly if you have a question, no matter how stupid.

dreamhost has a good referral system. I was thinking about using them, I know MisterSatan uses them...so if you sign up for them you should hook him up. wink

I use EhostPros. Not a very big fan, their "bandwidth running out" warnings are useless ("contact site admin immediately!" Okay....where's the admin contact address? What?) and I think, after looking through this thread, they're a bit pricey...

Edited to add: Oh, and they will FLOOD your e-mail account with those stupid warnings, and they'll all say the same thing: "80% of bandwidth used." I get about 20 of them near the end of the month, and they ALL say that mad

I'd recommend the Canadian company D.I.Y. Web Hosting. They host our site and a lot of bands around here.
