The DEA's new "Drugs of Abuse" publication (fully online) has been released to much fanfare from current and former drug abusers.

A guide so complete, thorough and full of enticing hilarious photographs, it truly must be seen to be believed. Containing fantastic spoof(?) "rave posters", and a full color pill chart, the guide helped me identify and swiftly consume several mystery pills that had been lying about my apartment. Thanks DEA!

Mr. Sun has a hilarious review of The Guide here.

I must say that, for me, the primary impact of the magazine was to make me want to do drugs. I'm as straight as an arrow, but after looking at this DEA publication I simply can't wait to start cramming psychoactive substances down my pill hole.

There must be some DEA subcontractors who get to have tons of fun making these publications. I think I want their job.

High school students often purchase drugs from fellow students.

Looks to me more like the art teacher purchasing from the gym teacher.

If there's anything that makes the drug war worth waging, it's the unintentional comedy value of government propaganda.

They have to know that there are a ton of people out there who are going to look at this, smile to themselves and think, "Well, my to-do list is written."

My absolute favourite has to be LSD. There is no physical dependence, and unknown (meaning no?) psychologial dependence. The effects are

Illusions and hallucinations, altered perception of time and distance

sounds pretty wicked. But the best part is the effects of an overdose:

Longer, more intense "trip" episodes

What!?! If you take too much all that happens is you have a better experience? Holy Zombie Jesus, hook me up.
And the withdrawl behaviour? none!

I was unsure about whether I wanted to try LSD. Now I'm actually a lot more certain. Thanks DEA.

Kid at my school jumped out a window on LSD. Witnesses say he though he was being chased by something, though exactly what, accounts vary.

Anyway, dunno if that counts as a "side effect" or what...

I don't see why the DEA document is "funny". Most of it is good quality, reliable, researched, information. That's important for harm reduction amoungst drug users. This is no "Reefer Madness" document. There don't appear (on my breif skim reading of it) to be any alarmist health claims.

Medicin identification isn't anything new; the British National Formulary or eMIMs have "tictac" images.

But really, is this propaganda? Apart from their insistance on using the word "abuser" rather than "user" it seems like it is " clear, scientific information about drugs in a factual, straightforward way, combined with scores of precise photographs shot to scale" and that it " fulfills an important educational need in our society".

Maybe I just needed to smoke a bowl before reading this article? tongue

Drugs are bad kids!

Weed makes you feel like everything is beautiful, and life is worth living;

While shrooms, make you feel like life and sociality are some of the most perfectly developed parts of human nature -- and although we're crooked as 'mankind' they make you feel like it's worth being a better person to live this life;

And finally, ecstasy makes you feel like you are able to talk about things to other people!

So remember kids! Don't do any of these drugs, because we're human, and doing any of the above things is *bad*!

A fair point. But in a word, yes, it's propaganda. Take a look at the section on MDMA,

it also produces nerve cell damage that can result in psychiatric disturbances and long-term cognitive impairments. The user will often experience increased muscle tension, tremors, blurred vision, and hyperthermia. The increased body temperature can result in organ failure and death.

MDMA neurotoxicity and long-term damage has been debunked but the DEA refuses to reveal as much. "Organ failure and death" like several famous cases in Florida resulted from PMA, a (then) legal analog that's quite dangerous and would not exist without prohibition.

To quote Joe Goebbels, propaganda never involves the telling of lies, but of carefully selected half truths.
