The film that premiered on Discovery channel last night. Did anyone check it out? Thoughts?

Taking into account the colossal extent of my complete scientific ignorance, I find the science involving the film's concept fascinating. As a film, pretty lame.

If it is the same one that was on the BBC a few weeks ago, I thought it was crap. Which was a shame because yeah the concept was totally fascinating and scary.

I took Earth Science as an elective two years ago so I think I can speak difinitively on the subject... And I like rocks too... surreal

Anyways, what is this "concept" you refer to?? Now I'm all curious...

Indeed it was.

The science behind the lame-ass movie is frightening and fascinating. I was living when Mount St. Helen's errupted in '81. I literally thought the fucking world was coming to an end. The ash was piled up like fucking snow, and it hurt to breathe outside.

Mainly that nearly the whole of Yellowstone is a gigantic volcanic crater with an insane amount of magma housed underneath it, and that the perceived pattern of eruption is every 600,000 years or so, a timeline that suggests we're overdue.

I love the science of Geology, but sometimes I hate Geologists. Actually, no, I hate how science shows always seem to put things in the context of -we're due for an eruption, or a meteor strike, or whatever.

Three extremely large explosive eruptions have occurred at Yellowstone in the past 2.1 million years with a recurrence interval of about 600,000 to 800,000 years.

More frequent eruptions of basalt and rhyolite lava flows have occurred before and after the large caldera-forming events. For example, scientists have identified about 30 different rhyolite lava flows that erupted after the most recent caldera eruptions, about 640,000 years ago, from vents inside the caldera. The most recent was about 70,000 years ago.

Many of these eruptions were separated in time by several tens of thousands of years. Because the evidence of earlier eruptions may have been either buried or destroyed, we do not really know how often the volcano has actually erupted.

Having said that, I am a Discovery channel junkie, and did catch some of the special.

Right. I was mainly going on meager knowledge I've picked up from various texts and was mentioned in the film. Obviously there isn't a consensus, but it is quite interesting, and I imagine most people don't realize that Yellowstone is a volcano.

doesn't matter where you live if it blows. you're stilling going to have to deal with the depressed temperatures world wide.

Did they mention anything about continental drift? Seems to me that it wouldn't be very likely for a "huge" amount of magma to persist under one location for over a million years. Not to mention the fact that a volcano with a crater the size of Yellowstone would have much less power (proportionately) than a normal volcano...

Not quite as dramatic, but there is a volcano outside of Anchorage, AK that goes off every once in a while and blankets the city with thick grey ash. It's an interesting experience, and it tends to leave the city very messy for a while.

I so want a supervolcano in downtown LA. Rivers of lava gushing down La Brea, swallowing up humvees is kind of a dream of mine.

I was around for Mt. St. Helens, too. I was living in Michigan, and remember it snowing ash for days. It affected the average temperatures that far away for a couple years...

It's on again and i'm making a concerted effort not to change the channel so I can finally see for myself. so far there has been a magically circular ring of "vents" that formed in unison. I have no problem with them forming a misshapen ring over a period of time, but the thing is just forced... and the acting is horrible too.

I am determined to watch the rest of the movie. (I am also stoned.)

Yeah, it's definitely terrible film-wise.
