I don't think it's possible to get a car with no money. That's just how it goes I'm pretty sure.

Isn't LA pretty easy to get around using the bus?

umm ok, well first your kinda fucked, but not forever.

Depends what part of the city you are going to live in, and where you work. But it sounds like you don't have that part figured out yet.

Get a bike, and try to find a place within a few blocks of a Metro stop and you'll be able to get around ok. I'd recommend east hollywood or chinatown. Both have metro lines running right through them and you can still get pads that will only make you mostly broke--instead of entirely broke.

Why do you "need" to move to Los Angeles?
I say you "need" to stay the hell out of LA, for your own good

Go to school. Get a B.A. That takes four years. But you won't find a job that pays enough to buy a car so you have to get at least a Masters. Another two years. Then wait another year or two to get hired at something resembling a "career". Then you can buy any car you want, but by then you'll forget why you wanted to get to LA in the first place...

I've heard about people who buy cars and need them sent to another state, like If someone in CA bought a car from someone in Vermont on Ebay, they'd need a guy to drive it to them. That's about all I got, but good luck.

Also, if Phish are having a concert in California anytime soon, just ingratiate yrself with some hippies!!!

So does 4LOM. So do bean and I, on occasion. Between the bus routes and the light rail routes they connect to, it's really pretty easy to get around.

I can get from my house in Long Beach to my office in downtown Los Angeles in 45 minutes on the light rail. It takes 35-55 minutes to drive, depending on traffic. I can spend $50 on a Metro pass that's good for a month, whereas with current gas prices, I spend $50 a week on gas if I drive.

Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Your not gonna be able to take a bus or ride a bike from Malibu to Ventura. Ventura is in the next county, about 30 miles from Malibu. Your best bet would be to find a place to stay in Ventura--its a small town that you can walk around in easily if you live in the downtown part--and a bike would get you anywhere in that town. Or you could try looking in Oxnard--I'm pretty sure there is a bus line that runs between Ventura and the 'Nard.
But Malibu to Ventura--you are SOL for public transpo.

Um... Ventura and Malibu are most definitely NOT Los Angeles.

Dude, you're fucked.

There is no public transit between Ventura and Malibu. It's 40 freakin' miles, man.

I've got a car you could have for free, pity I'm in the UK.
Try finding someone that's got a second car thats off road, maybe they were going to do up and never got round to, they might give it away just to get the space. Or maybe someone who's just bought a newer car and hasnt sold their rusty old heap bacause they didnt think they'd get much/it was worth the hassle. I got a car like that once, drove it around for a while then scrapped it.
Got another free once, just needed a little bit of welding - didnt cost much, and it was fine.
Also worth trying to have a look round the back of big main dealers, see if they have any tatty trade-ins round the back that they would other wise scrap or send to auction, you might be able to pick summut up for next to nothing.

Bear in mind though the main cost of a car is running/maintaining it, so if you have no cash...
Maybe just geta crappy job for a couple of months to pay for that!

Recent graduate? Already got a job lined up?

Car dealers and banks should be stumbling over each other to lend you money for car loans and lines of credit. If you go to the bank to find out your options I think you may find the problem is they want to lend you way too much...

Of course, it might be different for arts degrees. Or extenuating factors and existing debt and whatnot. wink

Can the ppl you stay with help you get around, share car/rides, etc? Also a car loan? Or if your credit is bad, a place that gives anyone credit but charges ridiculously high interest. I did this and bought a car, paid on it for 18 mos. and it cost me like $5000 with 21% interest but I didnt have a choice, no cosigner and no credit. So pretty much I bought my credit record.
