Every minute, somewhere in the world, a woman dies from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. [...]
Each year close to 11 million children do not celebrate a fifth birthday. An overwhelming 40 percent do not live beyond a month.
Research concentrates on the 1% of infant death that occurs in the developed world, but are these tiny children in the developing world being killed by obscure, hard-to-treat illness? No.
"The glaring fact is that a vast majority of infant deaths can be averted through affordable interventions such as breast-feeding, clean delivery, maintaining warm temperature for the baby and antibiotics," said Vinod Paul of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences' pediatrics department.
You know, I hate to be a dick, but if we cure everything, where are we going to put the surplus people? How are they going to be fed? what are they going to do for a living?

We'll need a lot of technicians to maintain the baby-killing machines. If they are only operating at 40% capacity right now then just imagine when all disease is cured!

'Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude, returned the gentleman, a few of us are endeavouring to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink, and means of warmth. We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices. What shall I put you down for?
Nothing! Scrooge replied.
You wish to be anonymous?
I wish to be left alone, said Scrooge. Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer. I dont make merry myself at Christmas, and I cant afford to make idle people merry. I help to support the establishments I have mentioned they cost enough: and those who are badly off must go there.
Many cant go there; and many would rather die.
If they would rather die, said Scrooge, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population. Besides excuse me I dont know that.
But you might know it, observed the gentleman.
Its not my business, Scrooge returned. Its enough for a man to understand his own business, and not to interfere with other peoples. Mine occupies me constantly. Good-afternoon, gentlemen!

Okay, see, that's more what I was going for. How do we fix the problem of overpopulation in light of the fact that more people are living longer all the time, and even if we do figure out something that works we've still got nine billion odd people who have to grow old and die before any solution kicks in.

1- how many people live in india
2- how many newborns die here in the united states
3- the abortion rates of india
4- the abortion rates of the usa
5- how can we take care of every country when were deeply in debt ourselves.. AND off fighting some stupid war?
When I saw your thread title I instantly thought to myself, "That's how many customers we used to serve at Starbucks during the morning rush." And each of them spent more on morning coffee and/or pastry than I spent on car insurance. I don't want to deny anyone their luxuries, but it's pretty amazing and disturbing that two places can be so different despite the fact that both populations are made of plain old humans.
Thanks, Cigarette. The connection that people don't seem to be making is:-people in rich countries have fewer children *because those children are more likely to survive*

India doesn't seem to have a problem with living space. 1 billion+ citizens and counting.

Usually if there are a lot of people you definitely have a problem with living space. Been to New Delhi lately? The line for vindaloo is 4 miles long.

As is the line to the loo. Which doesn't exist because they don't have plumbing.
