The strip club in Idaho that attempted to bypass a local anti-public nudity ordinance by giving customers sketch pads has been raided by local authorities.

Boise allows full nudity for "serious artistic" expression only, so the club handed out pencils and sketch pads to patrons so they could sketch naked women.

A police spokeswoman said officials concluded, however, that patrons were not focused on art, so officers cited three dancers for violations of the city nudity ordinance. "The case is being reviewed by the Boise city attorney for the possibility of future citations," said spokeswoman Lynn Hightower.

It’s unfortunate that Boise doesn’t allow nakedness inspired artistic expression, or lust inspired artistic expression. Of course, people who frequent strip clubs have no artistic sense, even if it’s done on the sly.

Now we can discuss whether naked girls are art or porn! OH BOY!

For some reason that discussion seems familiar. Hmm. I'm just imagining things...

Hmm, I'm not a frequent customer of strip clubs, but I'd imagine that this isn't quite true.

Indeed this is a setback for "serious artistic nudity" in strip clubs around the world.

I heard about this place a couple months ago. Supposedly for a while people actually came in and sketched occasionally.

I'd rather not use this case as the basis for an art vs. porn discussion, thank you. It's like starting a conversation about nutrition by talking about "The Twinkee Defense"

That is such bullshit. I hope you are kidding. Graham Greene, Carol Reed, Otto Preminger, just to name a few frequented burlesque houses if not outright brothels. And I'm sure countless other artists did the same. I had my phase too. Appreciation of the human form even if just to get off is in itself an artistic act.

I really hope you're kidding.

I hope he was joking to, though it is too self congratulatory to call just appreciating form out of lust essentially an artistic act. Artistic act implies doing something, though it is true thatone who likes the body w/aeasthetics interest has appreciation of art. Yet for most the overwhelming motive is a thrill, "wild" night out, & fodder for masturbatorty pleasure.

Not that there is anything wrong w/that, just that much more artistic appreciation occurs by those patrons usually looking at art when it is not doinated by lust & general revelry. Though for some strippers, there is a beautifil spirit of artistic expression & giving the deeper self.

I think they should do what that one club did and have the girls do naked shakespeare. That was awesome.

i wish i could have seen that. i already masturbate whenever i see shakespearian plays, so nakedness would definitely seal the deal.

This story brings a great many tears to my eyes. I mean,.. for serious art students, this would be such a great idea! It would be so awesome to have a place for artists to just gather and chill and do some live art without having to always sign up for classes. I would be totally down for a place like this, if I could find one around here. I started out drawing models out of magazines, and I don't ever have the opportunity to draw from a live model and no time to sign up for classes... so it sucks there aren't more places trying to do stuff like this...

They should have turned the place into a church. Maybe a branch of the Church of the Subgenius. That way they could not be busted. As for the comment people who go to strip clubs can't draw check out the Lautrec exhibit at the National Gallery of Art. That little french guy can draw.

as a strip club frequenter and a serious artist i'm going to go ahead and take offense to this one. hell, art in a strip club? kinda like news on a porn site, isn't it?

...but i agree with Gwendolyn; i'd pay good money to see the drawings that came out of it. i'm picturing a lot of stick figures. with big tits.

It amazes me that some people think that they can control what other people do just because some people don't like that thing. How does it hurt Mr. and Mrs. Priss if I consent to go into a club that has naked consenting adults on display? I wish we could all just focus on fixing the real problems around use befoe we started inventing false ones.

That said, I also think sketches of strippers in action would be very artistic, if done by someone with skills.
