No no, the Bible.

Why would someone write the Bible? You mean, why would someone gather together the Books that form the Bible. Because they were called to it I guess.

Yep.

im christian. well.... i dunno... i believe in God. love him too. nuff said. that sums my deal up.

Now I'm serious here. Why do you feel that believing in God makes you a Christian?

To me, a Christian is, at the bare minimum, someone who:

  • Believes that Jesus Christ was a real person.

  • That Jesus Christ was also, literally, the Son of God, a divine and perfect being in addition to a human..

  • That Jesus Christ died "for our sins".

  • That believing in Jesus Christ will get you to heaven.

Do you believe all those things? If not, why would you call yourself "a Christian"?

Now, as far as I know, the only source for information about Jesus Christ is the Bible, specifically the New Testament. Do you believe that the Bible is the "Word of God"? Do you believe that it is accurate? If you believe that it is only partially accurate, how do you choose which parts you believe and which ones you don't? If you only believe part of the Bible, what makes you so sure you're going to Heaven?

The inability to believe all of the Bible was the final straw that made me decide that I was not a Christian. To me, the Bible is either all or nothing. It says it's perfect and the Word of God, so... how can you pick and choose? I didn't want to accept the whole thing, so I threw it all out.

To be honest, moderate and lukewarm Christians confuse me more than the fundamentalists.

Well, it's like science, right? In science, just because string theory doesn't make sense to you doesn't mean you chuck quantum physics (or whatever the bloody fuck category string theory actually falls under) altogether. The Bible is a book that has been passed down through the years, translated, retranslated, etc., etc. And the people who wrote it were not unbiased.

The point being that there is a middle ground. The reason fundamentalists don't make sense is because parts of The Bible contradict itself, and besides, they ignore parts anyway. There are instructions for proper care of a slave in The Bible, which is basically saying that slavery is okay under certain circumstances. They also ignore the part where it says it's okay to kill disobedient children. Further, fundamentalists add to The Bible: there is no mention of The Rapture anywhere in the bloody thing. The theory is that since Revelations (vaguely, like any other part of Revelations) mentions the true believers (I think there may be a number attached to that) being at God's side when he returns, and some of those true believers must be alive when it happens, then there must be a point where they are called and when they disappear. But like I say, it's really vague and requires TONS of interpretation. And Revelations was added to The Bible based on the visions of a guy who may or may not have been on mushrooms. Certainly reads like he was.

The only absolute about Christianity (and even this varies based on who you ask, but this is my definition) is the belief that God had a son named Jesus, who died for our sins. I decided at some point that I don't believe even that much, so I stopped going to church.

PS: I know nothing about science. The string theory thing was questionable, it just popped into my mind as an example. Replace that with any other scientific theory that is questionable, though.)

People keep saying this, and I don't understand why. Religion is religion, and I'll take a shot at any group of primitives out there. Jews, Catholics, Muslims, and the rest - I think it's all dangerous garbage and I'll say it loud and clear. Christians get the majority of the yelling around here because they intrude more frequently into the lives and politics of the countries most of us live in... that's it. If I moved to Indonesia tomorrow I'd be more prone to bash Allah than Jesus, but as it stands the Christians are the ones most likely to fuck up my life, so I bash them.

I wouldn't say that I hate Christians, but I've met my share of extremely irritating ones. When I was in middle school I went to an early morning bible meeting at the school where these kids got together for punch and cookies and shit and talked about scripture in modern context. I went with my neighbor, who was only going there to get into the pants of the leader of the group. Anywho, the part that got under my skin was when they had this part of the meeting where they compared how many people they had witnessed to, you know, spread the word. It was like some sort of contest. I expected someone to stand up and yell, "I won!"
Hooray for God and Jesus if they exist. I'm sure that Jesus was rivaling The Fonz on the cool ass mother fucker list. I know this. I don't need to hear it on repeat in stereo to get the point.
A historical reason for dislike could be that it's the cause of much unneeded conflict in most of europe for most of history.
Random note: Jesus was crucified on a cross... why make it the symbol of the religeon? Is it that it was just a symbol of power and it became the symbol, or did the pope get his marketing boys in on it?

I'm not a practicing Christian, but the amount of pure hatred for something that, though it has an overwhelming amount of obvious faults, (Let me say that again, an overwhelming number of obvious faults) can be a beautiful faith.

In a lot of instances, it's not intellectual conjecture about the nature of Christianity, it's just hate for hates sake.

Grow the fuck up, people.

This probably won't even bother me tomorrow, I just thought I'd say something.

I am as much as a liberal douche as anyone here. More so than many, I'm sure.

I strongly dislike the Christian right, and find their values oppressive and stupid.

Likewise, Catholicism, which I was raised.

But for fucks sake, lay off you hate mongers, Jebus was a froody dude who really knew where his towel was at.

Lighten the fuck up.

Yeah, I dont understand the derision Christians get these days, or why some people are so freaked out and threatened by them.

Muslims crash planes into the WTC? We have an obligation to understand their beliefs and understand why we're ultimately at fault. Dare to put monuments that outline basic Judeo-Christian morality that guildes our system of justice and society (AKA the Ten Commandments) and theorcracy is at the gates.

I don't think people feel threatened by all Christians, they just feel threatened by Fundamentalist Christians. If the Christian Coalition had their way porn, abortions, gambling and contraceptives would be made illegal and there would forever be a ban on gay marriage.
