In what authorities are describing as "an art crime in reverse," the elusive artist known only as "Banksy" has admitted to smuggling his works into four prestigious NYC museums, reports the Wooster Collective art site:

Dressed as a British pensioner, over the last few days Banksy entered each of the galleries and attached one of his own works, complete with authorative name plaque and explanation.

He says - "This historic occasion has less to do with finally being embraced by the fine art establishment and is more about the judicious use of a fake beard and some high strength glue." Banksy continues -"They're good enough to be in there, so I don't see why I should wait"

The Brooklyn Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Museum of Natural History were the recipients of these unusual "gifts."

While the staff at the Met discovered & removed the offending art the next morning, Banksy's work hung in the MoMA for three days before being pulled.

As of this writing, the pieces in the Brooklyn Museum & Museum of Natural History are still on display.

That's way better than nearly all of the installation art in MoMA. They should leave it.

Banksy has done lots of grafitti art on the derelict buildings in China town in Liverpool, and it's really great.

Smuggling those paintings in is a stroke of genius though, hats off to the guy!

Last time I was at the Museum of Natural History it didn't have art anywhere, except maybe like old native american and cave drawings and stuff.

Wait just visited the guy's site. Nevermind.

It has been done before. A number of times.

My friend, Ryan McGinniss, did something similar at the whitney. He had a bunch of Central Park artists do charcoal portraits of him and then he compiled them on to a postcard and duplicated the whitney's post card and then put them in the gift shop rack and people started buying them.

But the placing of one's own art in museums has happened a number of times.

I had thought of this just as I was posting it, and I'm thankful that you responded, as you're smarter than the average bear. I've been an airhead today (to say the least).

So when are we going to see your posters at the museum? wink
