Charles Vess is a master of artwork involving fantasy. Since his early comic book work in the 1970s he has established himself as a master of fairies, pixies and all wonder stuff.
For his new work, The Book of Ballads, he has transcended all his previous work and created something that pays homage to the ballads of old and also created something new and fantastical. He originally self published all these works in comic book form and had the stories written by his favorite writers such as Neil...
I remember seeing his stuff in the 70s, then he disappeared for a while, then seemed to return with the Sandman stuff. I've always had kind of a love/hate with his work. I love his pen and ink work, his use of line... but sometimes I find his stuff too static. His style hasn't really evolved, I guess.
I do love reading the comic book interviews, though, so keep 'em coming!
PS - Bill Willingham gave me my first, best, constructive criticism at a Seattle Comic Convention, back when I wanted to draw comics (I think he might have just started "Elementals"... might have even been earlier). Aside from being a (rumored) notorious deadline slacker, he seems like a great guy the one time I talked to him
very cool interview. i met him when he was in italy promoting the stardust books, he was very kind to chat to, and he even drew a fairy for me! here is a pic of it, hanging on my wall... and funny that he shoudl mention jeff smith in the interview too, since right beneath tha fairy sketch, there's a bone sketch by smith too!
oh... used to love attending comicons here in italy, where there were less ocean-sized fans than in san diego, and in general the atmosphere was so mellow!
Neil just posted about this interview on his blog.
"There's a lovely interview with Charles Vess over at Suicide Girls: http://suicidegirls.com/words/Charles+Vess/ (and having gone over there to read that, I wound up reading the Woody Allen interview and the Darren Aronofsky). Sucide Girls really has the best assemblage of cool interviews with people that's out there."
Which is preeeeeeeeecisely why I pay for the membership fee here. It's really cute to see these guys referencing each other across the net.
Charles Vess is one of my illustration heroes He really is a master of his craft, and it's nice that he can acknowledge his limitations and how his work can be best used.
