I mean, I know that there's a war going on and all of that, but in the last week gas went from 1.94 a gallon to 2.13. That's like 18... 19 cents. What the fuck!?

I think the reason was in a series of meetings Dick Cheney had with the heads of the various oil companies (and Enron, among other companies), but you'll never know why, because, obviously, you don't need to know. Just trust in the wisdom of Dubya.

Because it's spring, which means driving and road trips, which means increased gas usage, which means they jack up the prices.

Just be glad you don't live in Europe. Gas is much more expensive there than it is here. I think my dad pays close to $100US to fill the tank of his Ford Fiesta in Scotland.

the higher the price of gas the more it makes people realize the need for alternative fuels and better transportation systems.

The program is simple: people would not buy new cars; they'd just buy used ones. What is the point of a new-car purchase, anyway? When a used car can easily suffice and cost far less, we can conclude that new-car buyers have been brainwashed. They must do it for prestige, perhaps to obtain sex more readily. The car corporations, meanwhile, have built in "planned obsolescence" -- a new car model every year

Honestly, it's first and foremost due to the fact that people will pay it. There's a gas station here in Malibu that's charging $3.15 and people are paying it!!!! Area residents are rightly concerned that if people keep going to the station other stations will raise their prices to match. Ridiculous!

ok, uk-ers, fine, your gas is more.

but the distances we drive to work are regularly greater, and unless you live in one of the big 4 cities, our public transit i would bet is worse.

that said, americans are stupid. hummers indeed.

last time I checked locally we're getting a litre for around £0.85 give or take 6 pence depending on where you go

I agree, I don't care how much more it is than it was 10 years ago or whenever, you guys still pay nothing for it compared to the UK and europe

Because refineries are having to switch formulations for the coming busy summer months, and refinery capacity is already at maximum.....the necessary additives and thermal cracking process' are more expensive for special blend fuels and that cost gets filtered down to you, the user.
The gas burned in LA is much different than the gas burned in Montana than is burned in NJ...etc... and then it just falls into normal supply and demand dictates.

I dont see a issue with large vehicals. I own several old Musel Cars from the 60's, Yes the use more gas then a honda or a Kia, But they are so much more fun to drive and who want to look like a clone. Gas prices will keep going up as long as Bush in office. He gets money from his oil drilling.
there is a large surpluss of oil in the US but if the rich can make money by keeping the supply low, guess whats going to happen shocked

Last time I was in the UK two years ago it was 91p per litre.......so it has been mostly stable...and I remember truckers threatening to strike because of the high price of fuel there...the high price being 80% in the form of taxes levied by the Parliament.

I don't think just the whining about prices is the point. The price of gas is FAR outpacing all other price increases in our marketplace. This is something more than just covering overhead, like tarriffs and shipping or from normal inflation rates. When I was 18(10 years ago) I paid 85 cents a gallon. 300-400% inflation in 10 years is something else all together. It is a mystery to me.

No, I appreciate that. It is just more "jealousy" on my part.

While I saw that the public transport in Washington was excellent (I don't drive and could get from the airport to the GMU for like $10), I didn't see hardly any in Oklahoma that would have suited me in the four weeks there.

Plus, it is pretty difficult to walk most places in the US where I have been, due to a lack of pavements.

I understand that gas might be more expensive in the UK, but the cost affects us much more here in the US. Just think of the cost of shipping a product from the coastal cities (where imported goods are brought and a lot of produce is grown) all the way to the middle of the US. That cost is enormous and just gets more so when gas prices increase. Those costs get passed on to us in the form of increased prices of goods and services. And the coastal areas are not immune since gas is required to contain ethanol which comes from the middle of the country and must be shipped to the coast. If the prices increase much more, I am quite certain that there will be strikes and shortages.

That is THE dumbest reasoning in the history of thought. Congratulations...it's not every day that somebody says something as galatically stupid as that.

The problem that the original poster has is the sharp increase in price over a short time. Price is a variable. It's relative to the discussion. If you normally pay $2 US for a gallon of gasoline...and they raise it to $2.20...that's a 10% increase in the price of gasoline.

If you are paying the equivalent of $7 US for a gallon of gasoline as mat8drb said...a 10% increase would bring the price up to $7.70. Don't pretend that you wouldn't get your knickers in a twist if you woke up tomorrow to find that kind of an increase.

A college prof. I had use to always complain that when he was younger there were sidewalks(what I am assuming you call 'pavements') everywhere and they would walk a lot of places when it was nice, but now it is an act of courage or stupidity, b/c you either have to walk in the street or in people's yards to go anywhere.

Yeah; I was in Herndon (VA) at the tail end of November, and about a mile from where I wanted to be, and there were no pavements on either side of the road between the hotel and the conference place. I'd just got the map from Mapquest and assumed I could walk it. I got a lift back, and a lift the next day. smile
