How, exactly, can you try to keep yourself alive longer? Eat less red meat? Exercise regularly? Menstruate?

Dr Thomas Perls, director of the New England Centenarian Study, spoke today to the International Healthy Ageing and Longevity Conference about old people. In a panel entitled "The Older you get, the Healthier you’ve been", he pitched his theory. The reason eighty five percent of centenarians are women might have less to do with estrogen and a lot more to do with the bane of womanhood: The Period.

The regular (or dare I say it, periodical) blood loss experienced by women can sometimes lead to iron deficiency, generally regarded as a bad thing. Overall, the average women has a lower iron count than the average man. But even this cloud has a metallic lining.

"Iron is a critical factor in our cell's ability to produce those nasty molecules called free radicals that play an important role in ageing," Dr Perls said outside the conference today.

"It may be as simple as having less iron in your body makes you age more slowly and less susceptible to age-related diseases where free radicals play an important role.

So what can be done against this blatant act of natural discrimination? According to Dr Perls, the solution is simple.

"I menstruate but only every eight weeks. I do that by donating a pint of blood to the hospital.

"A little bit of that is altruism but I'm also actually seriously trying to make myself iron deficient."

Perhaps this is the kind of publicity to fill our blood banks?

'Cause after all, what is it? a cluster of blood vessels, awaiting a fertilized egg. Providing a safe warm place for that egg to grow. I've actually donated blood to get rid of extra iron, although I never thought of it as menstruating (that creeps me the fuck out). That blurb doesn't mention it, but there's evidence that differences in iron concentrations are part of the reason men have more problems with heart disease than women.

An interesting part of modern life is we get a hell of a lot of iron from, wait for it, FLOUR. White flour is fortified with iron and other nutrients that are removed when it's milled. Unfortunately the form of iron they use is not so good for you compared to iron you'd get from real food.

They generally get a lot less iron than meat-eaters.

I think he's talking about having a lower level of iron, but not a deficiency. That is to say a lower level that remains within the acceptable or normal range.

And to the person who asked, Dave Foley said that on an episode of Kids In The Hall.

So would being vegetarian also put you into the lower range of normal iron levels?

Well I'm a vegetarian and my iron levels are nearly always borderline, so I suspect I don't have to worry about this. I'm probably one of the people who shouldn't donate blood, but I do.

i always here mention of normal levels of vitamins, minerals, protien, and other vitals. but rarely here mention of who is setting these levels. i hope to god people arent refering to FDA recomended levels, especially vegitarians. The FDA food "pyramid" is rediculous, particularly for veggies. why would you follow recomended intake for minerals and vitamins from an agency that you disregard thier recomended diet??
just confused with peoples sources..

No. You can find lots of iron-rich foods that aren't meat. Dark, leafy greens, for example.

After I puzzled my way through your abominable homophone mixup, I agree with you. Any competent nutritionalist can tell you both a general acceptable range, which might well be useless to your body type. Any competent nutritionalist can tell you your particular recommended daily intake, which is far more meaningful than an advertisers RDI (frequently equal to "one serve" of their product...)

As a vegetarian I'm just curious. I know there are lots of iron-rich non meat foods, I also know that you need to eat them with vit. c rich foods to help absorbtion. Apparently the iron in meat is more easily absorbed, regardless of what it's eaten with. So given these, it would seem that a healthy vegetarian would have levels at the lower end of the normal range. Is there a paper in a science journal on this?

1-10% of iron in plant food is absorbed, 10-20% in meat - see: http://www.vegsoc.org/info/iron.html

If you think of irons function - mainly to carry oxygen, then restricting the level of it will lower the oxygen getting to cells, which could have a similar effect to calorific restriction (see above), by reducing free radicals formed by metabolism.

Ok a tangent, but I find this fascinating.

NOTE: I state 'lower end of normal', not anaemic.

a woman only loses about one teaspoon of blood in the course of her period, which is quite quickly replaced. most of the content of menstrual fluid is tissue, i.e. the shedding of tissue from the uterine wall.

i am inclined to believe that this iron hoo doo borders on bullshit.
