It is a social commentary (but then again, what isn't?). What started out as a cult thing (the need to belong) turned into a cool thing to do. Subliminal messaging, "death as art," Japanese pop culture, technology, dissilusioned youth... the film is creepy and horrific not for the gore, but for its realism. It takes place in a society where the media controls all, and where people blindly and robotically do whatever needs to be done to be hip and with it. You may need to watch it more than once for the subtext. smile

but what do I know... the main message could be that little girl Japanese pop groups should be avoided at all costs for fear of death wink

I have watched it acouple of times and broke down and looked it up on the internet. I was freaking out because the name of the girl group was spelled differently a couple of times and I though I was just crazy.

If you like Suicide Club, for its wacky violence you would also probably enjoy 2DLK.
meh? Suicide Club

its basically exactly what the movie isn't, it's a movie against killing yourself.

it encourages you to know yourself, and love yourself, not kill yourself, that's weakness, and the people who didn't figure that out were weak, but this one girl, she realized that and found it out, even though she joined the club. and in the end the group isn't the Suicide Club, it's the club of kids who are living, since we don't see them die.

that's what I got from it, hope that helps.

unlike Battle Royale there's no huge crazy bunch of plotlines that can be followed throughout the story, it's just pretty much coming down to a couple scenes.

I've watched it quite a few times, it's one of my favorite movies.

My understanding, which is similar to Intrigue's, is that it's a gorey play on the Japanese culture and how it tends to be so 'cut-throat' about trends and whatnot. When something new and exciting comes about, it does so full force and everyone wants to be a part of it. It's posh and although you won't be able to live to say what you've done for the movement, you're abcense speaks volumes as those around you realize what's happened.

With most trends, people want to be able to figure out where it stems from and likewise, some are eager to take resposibility for starting such a monumental chain.

I think it's supposed to be this confusing. I think that's part of what the directer was going for in making this film. There are a few things the detective's were looking into and were sure they had some sort of connection. The tattoo's? The website? The girly pop-band?
Even at the end when everything is being explained, it's hard to grasp whats actually going on.

Great movie, though. I'm a fan smile

I think you may have to understand Japanese youth culture to have a better sense of what this film was about. I just watched it twice and I'm still not sure I get it completely. Everything I've read about it says its primary themes deal with the disaffection of the Japanese youth and their "disposable" society.

Either way, I thought it was a fascinating and totally David Lynch-esque trip!

I know what the film was about, I hated it, but that's just me. Lots of people liked it, so good for them.

It would be hard to get if you weren't familiar with Japanese pop/youth culture. Everyone's going along with this Suicide Club because it becomes the cool thing to do and it's transmitted through an annoying preteen pop group.

I personally thought it was too gratuitously gory (the mom cutting off her fingers?) and also unnecessarily elliptical. It also thought itself a little too deep. And that ending sequence with the kids asking the "philosophical" questions seemed a little too lifted straight out of the end of Neon Genesis Evangelion, in which the questions actually made sense and the sequence actually worked within the context of the show. Plus, this movie was just sooo japanese. Schoolgirls, gore, seppuku, fucking preteen squeeky pop groups. I know that was supposed to be part of the point, but sheesh.

Nerd rant over.
