theres a trailer for this movie here but its gotta be one of the most visually unique things ive ever seen! my first thought was it was just "cel-shaded" CG like you see in so many video games these days but they seem to have actually filmed it live action and then done...something to it. its crazy. cant tell if the story will be any good but i wanna see it even just for eye candy purposes alone eeek

It looks like the same technique he used for Waking Life. They just film it, then layer on the animation using a plain ol' Apple G3. Sort of like Rotoscoping. But it's really time-consuming, if I remember correctly, I think it took them a year to do the animation for Waking Life. The actual filming was done relatively quickly.

It doesn't look as bad as I thought it might. I'm still personally horrified by the animation / cell shading they used for the animated Lord of the Rings in the 80's and have been suspicious of that style ever since.

I actually got a chance to see Linklater do a demo of this technique live. It took an animator like an hour (maybe) to do some shit they filmed before the demo. It was awesome. All they do is film live action put it onto a computer and draw over it.

yep. new generation of the software and a new team of 35 people tracing it. there's a whole lot of warm fuzziness surrounding the idea of a Philip K. Dick novel being hand drawn overtop of some cool actors.

Keanu Reeves withstanding, I think it looks pretty damn good. My tolerance for bad acting must be seriously out of synch with everybody else's, because I don't think he's all that bad at all. Sure as hell not the worst.

Let's recalibrate. How many people thought Cary Elwes in Saw was laughably wretched? Show of hands.

Cary Elwes was beyond the valley of the bad in Saw.

That was literally the worst movie I have ever seen.

the program they use for it is a propietary program created by the artists behind Waking Life.

If you're interested in the technique, pop in the DVD for Waking Life and check out the ultra fucking boring behind the scenes doc of the creator going through the creation of one particular scene on the computer. its dull, but informative...

word.

I'll plunk down money to see it. The idea of a Waking Life type film with a definable plot is appealing. Then again, Linklater directed, so we'll see. He is capable of creating a narrative film, just not in some time.
