What happens if you're going to a strange country and you're not sure if you'll like the food? Take some with you. Just don't get caught by Customs and Excise.

Nigerian Surat Oluyemisi Anibaba, 42, was caught during a customs check at Heathrow Airport after arriving from Lagos in Nigeria last Thursday.
[...they found] 16st (104kg) of dead snails in her baggage [and have] fined [her] £400.

104 kg = about 230 pounds. Of dead snails. In her baggage.

Christ Z, how bad IS your cuisine if people bring a bag of snail with them so they won't have to eat your food?

Did she have to fly Lufsansa(sp?) Airlines on the way there? (Hint: pack your own food).

err... she wasn't taking them for herself, she was taking them to sell. and they probably aren't illegal, just tariffed and she was trying to avoid the tariff or something.

still, very odd. 230 lbs. of snails? that had to smell.

snails are delicious. That's quite a few of them, but I'd rather eat escargot than most of the food found in England myself.

I think after about 2 pounds though I'd get sick of snails.

I know crossing the US/Canada border you're required to declare if you have any snails...

I dont see what people have against english food.

Personally i dont mind a medium rare steak with a mushroom sauce.

Or lamb chops.

If its the fast food...such as fish and chips thats being critisized well thats fair enough but personally i kinda like that.

You get bad and good food anywhere, just depends if you eat somewhere nice, or somewhere shit.

I always think of snails as being slightly mobile rocks.

I've got a pet snail. His name is Herman, and he's invincible. He's survived a kamikaze dive out of the tank, and being sucked into the filter (twice). He's also about the size of a golfball. He doesn't look too tasty, though.

But have you tried, really tried to find out?

dead snails? Ewww!

can you cook a dead snail anyway?

(he wanders off to google and looks at some escargot preparation steps)

Can't really tell, after staving the snails for 5 days and dipping them in salt 3 times they can't be TOO healthy before you cook them! One site recommended feeding them Dill weeds before dipping them in salt "to give them a good flavor" - eww! Again!

That variety of snails is worth quite a lot though?

Surely, she could have been a bit more subtle, and say tried for getting 50kg through? I'm guessing she's used to customs being ineffective?

£400 fine? Thats a bit low

Must be fun working in an airport, when you get to catch all these people bringing bushmeat etc into Europe from W. Africa. puke

The authorities promptly boiled the snails for two hours and ate them with a side of mushy peas.

Bushmeat is great, and is highly proteinous. Much more than the more common forms of meat. West Africans are only trying to improve your diet over there.
