Ok so a video that came out like 20 years ago and was by far the hottest shit video ever at the time is overrated? Um no. And I don't even like Michael Jackson all that much, but that video isn't overrated.
Yeah, it really is overrated. Thriller resulted in about a million horrible trends in videos, the main one being stupid, pointless interruptions of the music, which the video is supposed to revolve around, with dialogue that furthers a totally incoherent plot. It was John Landis's attempt to resurrect the short film, which didn't happen. Instead, it comes across as a testament to Michael Jackson's ego and willingness to do the biggest, most expensive, eye-catching things at all costs. I saw it a couple years ago in its entirety and was really surprised at how boring and trying it was to watch. I would much rather watch, I dunno, Billie Jean, let's say. Better song, better video, better dancing.

The million trends are the reason why we can call it "influential." I was mesmerized the first time I saw it at my neighbor's house. They were the only people who had a big screen tv and the WHOLE BLOCK came to see it there. I will never forget that day. I do think Thriller is cool as hell. I also think billie jean is cool as hell. No one can dance like him. and yes, ALL of his videos are a testament to his ego.
