it depends on the bread. for example, the ends of a really tasty sour dough loaf with a good thick crust are good. the ends of a square whole wheat loaf (like the bread i buy for sandwiches) are not good.

Exactly.

If you like that pussy white bread crap, you must throw them away or feed them to wild animals (squirrels like bread, too, you duck-loving bastards!). If you eat wheat bread, the heels make very good toast. With jam. love

The thing i miss most about living in SF is that I can't get decent sourdough here. In california you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting some tasty sourdough.

Um, the crust is the tastiest bit of the loaf?

Unless you buy shitty cheap bread..... in which case, make toast. It. Tastes.
Exactly. The. Same.

god i hate the ends mad
i wish someone would make bread without them and just toss in 2 good peices to take the place of them. they make bread without the crust so why not without the ends?

we should also talk about the ends of a hotdog. is anyone else scared of the nasty crimped up part?!?

Although they do resemble reverse buttholes, hotdog ends don't bug me much. It does gross me out when I'm chewing things of one consistency, and bite down on something of a different consistency. For instance, chewing a burger patty and finding something super hard or oddly chewy like a gummy bear in there.

When I was younger, I threw up because a crouton was in my cottage cheese. I feel your pain.

When I'm waiting for a student loan cheque they're perfectly good food – great with soup.

When i've just cashed a student loan cheque, they get fed to the animals. As I live in the concrete jungle, they probably get eaten by desperate foxes.

I don't buy bread. It always goes bad on me because I don't eat it very often so it's pointless to buy it just for it to get bad. I know I could keep it in the freezer but I don't like thawed bread and I don't like my bread cold.

I LOVE ends on fresh-baked bread. I'll fight for them. On store-bought bread...I leave the top end as sort of a stale-prevention device. when it gets down to just the two ends left...I'll use them for a sandwich...because it's stupid to throw out perfectly good food...especially when you buy good-quality, organic bread that costs $3.50 a friggin loaf.

Exactly. (Though not in American money... smile )

You put the ends in the freezer to save for things like meatloaf or dressing, but in reality they just sit there because you never really make dressing and when you are making meatloaf you forgot that you have frozen bread and you use the fresh bread anyway. tongue

I always take the third piece in from the end. the first 2 pieces always taste funny to me. of course, I won't drink milk after it's been open for 2 days. I'm a weird one.

No, I feel ya on that one. Milk goes bad soooo quick. Not bad persay...just tastes funny. I normally eat the bread from the inside out but my Dad yells at me when I do that with his loafs.

Slather them in tons of butter, sugar, and cinnamon, then toast 'em. The butter soaks all through and softens it up, and the sugar and cinnamon shouldn't need explaining.

It's a far cry from healthy, but it sure is tasty.

My dad and I used to fight over who got the ends. We loved using them for toast.

Those who have ever eaten homemade bread will understand why I refuse to throw the crust/ends away. That's the best part!

If the bread gets a bit stale, I don't throw it away. I crumble it outside and let the birds eat it.
