You aren't really going to get married are you?

Every time I hear people say they have been engaged for a long time I wonder why they do this. If you intend to get married, do it! Otherwise it's kind of cheesy to say you are engaged. A year or so is plenty long to be engaged without marrying I think...

I am not engaged. In fact I just was broken up with last week.....

I also don't understand paying tens of thousands of dollars (pounds) for a one day ceremony/party.

Yes, it is an important, life-changing day ... but eeek ...

Again, I just don't get it.

Again, as you said, it's an important life-changing day biggrin
The fact is Emily's parents often go on holiday to Portmeirion because they're both fans of The Prisoner, she really likes the place fromwhen she's been with them, and I really like what I've seen from both the show, and their home videos... Admitedly, it's going to be expensive to get married there, but I think the atmosphere and location and everyone there will make it well worth it.smile

I very much agree. I don't see the point. It's like you are trying to prove something to someone. If I was going to get married today I would probably invite like three to ten people and I would only expect my parents to actually show up.

If you love each other and truly plan to be together forever then I don't see why you have to save up for years for a party which is essentially what one of those big cheesy parties is.

Perhaps that's why you posted this:

I'm not trying to be an ass or diss you, but from your journals, it sounds like you were in a long distance relationship rather than actually living with your ex, and until you do live with someone 24/7, I don't think you will understand just what a difference that makes in a relationship, and from what you've said, you sound like the kind of person that just doesn't want to get married anyway, and if that's the case, you just wouldn't get wanting to spend a load of money for a ceremony.

Emily and I aren't trying to prove anything to anyone, we (and everyone that knows us)already know that we love each other and already live together, it's simply a case of that's where we want to get married. It's a really nice place, but the fact we both have large families and large circles of friends means it just is going to cost a lot, and we're both at a point in our lives where we have certain things we want to do first, (ie set up business) so we can afford a nice wedding.
If on the other hand you only have a handful of people to invite, then by all means go for it smile

I'm in a steady relationship, as "permanent" as most marriages are (which doesn't say much these days). But neither my gal or myself are really into the ring thing.

i agree with somethin1919 , spend the money on travelling or furthering yer own life...marriage does not solve any problems , it cements them into law..i question the whole idea of marriage ..i guess if you like the whole white picket fence idea , go for it ..i wish you luck..be a complete person first though...

I was engaged at 24 and married by 25 - wife was 23 when we engaged. We were the mature one's in our group of friends. Still married, going on 9 years in June. The only advice I can give is that you will change over the next 5-7 years, and communication is THE key to accepting the changes. You don't have to change together, but you have to be accepting of the changes in your partner as they do of yours.

I was married young and then divorced after only a few years. Now I'm ending six year relationship and I still don't know what the fuck I'm doing.

Love sucks.

I'm engaged...we only made it formal because we had nothing better to do. It really doesn't matter. I'm not excited about getting married...I'm excited about continuing to live our lives the way we like.

But technically I am one of "those people" now.

I doubt that I will ever get married. Not that I wouldn't want to. Just doesn't seem very likely.

I agree love sucks.
