The UN is estimating that up to one half of the world's languages will be gone in the next hundred years.

"A language is a culture," says Shambela, who works for Mozambique's National Institute for the Development of Education. "It contains the history of a people and all the knowledge they have passed down for generations."

While I mourn for the loss of culture and history, I can't help but feel a sense of gladness that the world's peoples are moving closer to being able to speak to each other in a single native language.

Experts estimate half the world's people now use one of just eight languages: Chinese, English, Hindi, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese and French.

How do you see it?

a unified earth would be fantastic, kind of a shame that losing ones cultural identity seems to be the price though.

Everyone should move to Japanese... that would calm the fuck out of some people... having to be stoic enough to learn a language with thousands of heiroglyphs....

God is against a unified earth. He seperated us and put up language barriers so that we couldnt build a tower to heaven. It seems he really doesnt want our company.

Which is never going to happen. There are different languages and different cultures because people are spread across the Earth. Perhaps when we reach Gattaca stage the middle and upper class will all belong to whatever race Mariah Carey belongs to.

In related news, 99% of the world's current population will be gone in the next 100 years. Including you. So go ahead, study Swedish. You'll be gone before it is. wink

Oh, and if you can’t tell, this is another new concept called sarcasm. wink

Interestingly, it makes no note of the way these 8 languages are evolving. In lots of locations they've diversified with their own particular phrases etc.

Still I guess the internet and TV are stopping that now. Soon we'll all speak like we're in 'Friends' - even the natives in the Amazon.

Come on now, some of the reviews on there aren't exactly the most informed ever, but suggesting the customers speak like they're in Friends is quite cheap shot...

Guess it seems pointless to learn Conversational Dolnoserbski...

Mi konsenti, Esperanto estas la nova / malnova mondo lingvo. Ebena William Shatner senti la sama vojo.
