Inspired by 2 other threads (the 'hated artists' in Music and 'OBEYGIANT' in SGArmy)...

Tell me visual artwork you LOATHE! The stuff you wish didn't exist. The stuff you think is total bullshit.

This is bound to get ugly and shouldn't be taken as attacks on those who like artwork mentioned here. We all have different tastes, right?

Here are some of the things that immediately come to my mind:

*Dale Chihuly
*1/2 of the stuff in Juxtapoz magazine(the other half is brilliant)
*Anything trying to teach me a lesson or sway my political beliefs. That's not artwork, it's propaganda. Sure, some propaganda is very well done and very artistic. But I really don't care what some artist has to say about the current social climate.

There will be more. Tell me yours.

Oh, and I almost forgot (and I know I'm gonna get crapped on all over for this)-

Andy Warhol.

There, I said it. I dunno- I mean, pop art itself as a movement was pretty important, I agree- I just don't like looking at pictures of soup cans and Marilyn Monroe in 4 different colors. Especially since most of his works have been assimilated by the advertising industry. How many fucking times do I need to see Garfield in place of Marilyn?

Okay, I feel better.

I'm sick sick sick of pop art in general. I saw an Lichtenstein exhibit once on accident and it bugged me a lot. "Wow, he had a light projector..."

People are free to discuss things they like, also. Meanwhile I'll mention a few other things that irk me (mainly online):

*"fetish photographers" who just take black and white pictures of goth girls. What's fetish about that?

*websites where artists (mainly photographers) do more talking than showing. "My artwork is so deep and meaningful. See, I'm attacking certain social issues...."

Don't talk. Show. If we don't get the point by looking at it, you're doing a bad job.

Off the cuff, I'm going to say Steven Spielberg as a filmmaker. He's made some great movies but I'd argue vehemently that most of the work he's done is anything but inspiring. And that goes for "Schindler's List" too.

Hmmm, okay, stuff we like... well, anything insane is good. Like this guy's stuff or something equally bizarre. And things that are complicated, like a film by the brothers Quay.

Oh god I'm glad you said that.

Have you read Crispin Glover's essay "What Is It?"

If not, you should.

And how about Marilyn Manson as a visual artist? What a friggin' joke. But he's marketed himself well enough that he could crap on a wall and people would think he's a genius.

I'll get grilled for this but going back to more traditional artists, I'll have to say Jackson Pollock.

"When I am in my painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It's only after a sort of 'get acquainted' period that I see what I have been about. I have no fears about making changes, destroying the image, etc., because the painting has a life of its own."

I just don't see any value in this avant garde approach to art. The same could be said for much of the Saatchi art.

I could crap on a wall and call it whatever I want but is it art? Not to me it isn't.

Yeah, There is a pack of buddy buddy artists in Juxtapoz and thats all you see now, over and over. I feel juxtapoz doesnt take any chances with art like it used to.

I can appreciate *some* political art, particularly the old propaganda print art earlier in the 20th century. I think the problem these days is that there isn't any sort of unifying political voice that can be a common artistic thread. There are simply too many divergent viewpoints for any given artist to speak to a large enough body of people.

I am, however, fond of the sculptures of Charles Krafft. Some of his art is very political and relevant.

I hate all earth art. All of it. And anyone who's ever created or been involved in the creation of earth art should be dipped in lava and audited by the IRS.

Covering a hill in a tarp is not art. Grrr... mad

Rob "Loafhead" Liefeld. Yeah, most of the art I know is in comic books. I don't know who a lot of the folks in this thread are, but I hate Liefeld with a fiery hot passion. Him and all his clones. He's got much to answer for... art-wise and business-wise.

And Todd McFarlane, just 'cause he's a dick. It's not like he's an artist anymore.

And most everyone that's created a cartoon series since John K. did Ren & Stimpy, which includes damn near everything on Nick and Cartoon Network now and over the past few years. All shit.

But Bob Ross... man... Bob Ross.

H.R. Giger, if anyone actually considers him an artist. I think he was when he first started, perhaps.

I hate Cezanne, and it's just because I think his paintings are ugly! He might have had some merit otherwise.

I hate shit like Michael Parks and that guy who does the whale murals who lives in that mansion in Hawaii, what's his name?

I forgot Richard Avedon. Repulsion! Pretension!

-People who take pictures in Black and White and instantly think its art ignoring little aspects little compostion, subject, texture, etc...
-People who put naked girls (or boys) on rocks and think they are making a grand statement.
-Fetish photographers who have no sense of style (about 80% of them)

And last but not least... Thomas Fucking Kinkade!
