You buy a bit of land in a leafy suburb and build a retirement home. It's a nice area, what could go wrong?

"You would think twice moving next door to a chemical factory or a penal reform institution," said Mrs Beaumont [...but...] "What we faced was horrendous, [...] There was a disco two nights a week, and we had students urinating in the garden as well as all their screaming, shouting and swearing on their way home. The students who lived on the campus were worse. Once they were racing around in shopping trolleys into the small hours."

Mr & Mrs Beaumont tried complaining, then they tried an injunction, and then they went to court to get damages for "interference in the enjoyment of their property". They failed. The court case cost them £90,000. They can't afford it, so they're going to have to sell their house.

can't we all just get along? frown frown

The kind of people who'd take the noisy college kids next door to court?

"Won't it be quaint, dear, living in the midst of all of these university students?"

"Yes, I expect it'll have an old world sort of charm to it."

"Isn't retirement lovely?"

"Is that young man urinating on our garden gnome?"

"You would think twice moving next door to a chemical factory or a penal reform institution," said Mrs Beaumont, who used to work at the college.

She used to work there. She really should have known better.

"Oh no! They're racing around in shopping carts until the wee hours!"

I had neighbours like this in university. The same "retired with nothing to do" fuckers who move into a house within a mile of, not one, but TWO universities. Street up and down are filled with houses of students.

Our city had a by-law that stated that snowfall on a public sidewalk in front of your house had to be cleared within 24 hours. At 24 hours and 1 minute, these guys would start making complaints to the city and our landlord, even though it hadn't actually stopped snowing. They complained about the state of our trash and recycling bins -- claiming that it looked "messy". It's garbage! Where they expecting a Martha Stewart treatment for crap we're tossing out?

They were gone in a year.
