maybe.

the thing is that i'm having surgery on my throat in a few days. so, like, not being able to swallow my own spit or do anything but lie around dazed on Percs would sort of seem like an optimum time to quit my nearly 4 year habit with the no-no sticks. The OTHER no-no sticks.

my question to you board of fine people is:

does this seem stupid? i know i'm already going to feel like shit for about 2 weeks. Will also quitting at the same time drive me over the edge of the Cliffs of Insanity? I've also heard lots about the coughing, feels horrible, etc., and i don't want to get sick right when i'm already vulnerable and trying to heal.

Input?

Also i need a new hobby.

I've never stoped smoking so I can't tell you what happends, but I don't know how healthy it would be to smoke with a recent throat operation

Perfect time to quit. The first 2 weeks are the hardest anyway, and you won't be able to tell if you feel like shit from one thing or the other.

I think basically this is a redundant thread, because i could have just gone and aded my worthless personal experience and fears to that other thread about the "what happens when i quit!??!"

But i am selfish and want my own. PRECIOUSSSS.

I'm on my four-week mark today. It's really really been hard, but gets easier after about three weeks. Prepare for a few false starts, you have to get to know your triggers. The percs might make it easier, and they might make it harder. I'd say give it your best shot, and if it doesn't work out, try again when you're all done with that stuff.

See my most recent journal entry for withdrawal description.

I quit after smoking a pack of Marlboros a day for 12 years.
It will suck...but if you make a commitment, you can do it. Buy toothpicks, chew on them. If you smoke the wacky weed, get some. If you slip up, don't act like you can't keep trying. One cigarette doesn't necessarily lead to a lot more

You'll cough for about two weeks, and some nasty stuff is gonna come out of your lungs. Just remember that was caused by smoking, not by quitting.

I quit smoking that way-ish. You seem like you want to quit and when I was on painkillers I didn't even notice I wanted one anymore. Of course I was probally on much higher-dosages but the same rules apply, I think. Go for it.

Hobby?

Well, I've been going to the gym and doing a lot of cardio, because that's something I can't do well when I'm smoking. But the first two weeks should be spent with the blinds down in the dark, watching a lot of movies, sleeping a lot, and just putting some TIME in there, with as little stimulus as possible.

If you quit smoking you will start hacking up all kinds of undefinable goop ... it's inevitable.

Other than that, (from my experience at least) you're not much more grumpy than you are regularly ... just fidgety.

Of course, I'm still a smoker, and back when I had my tonsils out in 10th grade, I started smoking again the next day. I might not be the greatest point of reference.

Good luck with everything, whatever you decide ... and I hope the surgery goes well.

Being doped up on those Percocets might help you through it a little. If not, I have a few Oxycontin you can have. tongue

I always found it easier to slow down when I was sick or had changed environments. I don't think you would go crazy - you just need to figure out what to do with your hands wink

Not that I'm condoning this kind of thing wink but, because cigarette smoke contains all kinds of toxins, it does have a mild antiseptic effect on the throat (it's too nasty for bacteria to deal with). Has anyone else noticed that after they give up, they'll inevitably get a cold?

Rock Climbing!!! It's sooooooooooo fun!

And totally quit. Smoking. Not rock climbing. Start that. Rock Climbing. Anyway, yeah I've quit a couple of times and I have never gotten sick because of it. It seriously damages your immune system to smoke, so while I'm certainly no doctor, it stands to reason that it could only be the best thing for you, especially with that surgery. Good luck with everything! smile
