You'd think having a bachelor's degree in Media Studies would have potential employers pounding on your door whatever

That's almost as useful as the one I'll be getting in religion.

At least I'll have the psychology degree to work with.

Looking/applying for jobs has to be the most demeaning thing the average person goes through.

You'd think having a bachelor's degree in criminal justice wouldn't lead you to working 60 hours a week in a warehouse for $10 an hour & no benefits....but two years ago, that's exactly where I was.

The job market blows nowadays.

I cringe just thinking about doing my own job search when I graduate this May. I sure hope I didn't slave away all these years for nothing.

Depends how marketable your major is.
I'm trying to do the same thing I do now, just in a different city.

Actually...I blame it on the touchy-feely "everyone should go to college" philosophy that everyone seems to be pushing these days. Thre are too many people in college. College is now viewed more as a rite of passage than an educational endeavor.

Instead of pushing everyone to go to college...high school guidance counselors should be GUIDING kids with more street smarts than book smarts into trade schools.

Looking for a job sucks ass. Apparantly I'm not qualified for ANYTHING regardless of what experience I have. What I hate the most is when you go to an interview, they tell you they'll call you and let you know when you start, then you never hear back. I mean, if I didn't get the job just fucking tell me!

I took a career class in high school that ended with a test that told me I should be a killer whale trainer, a rock singer, or a midwife. Maybe I'll be a singing midwife for killer whales, haha

Well I'll be broke as fuck with a degree in acting, schlepping through LA praying that a casting director will have pitty on me while I go to my shoebox apartment, eat ramens, and cry.

Start looking before you graduate. It might help.

I agree. It doesn't seem right that there are folks who change their major 4 or 5 times, take 6 or 7 years to get their degree, and don't even put it to use. surreal

That is so true. Higher learning is suppossed to be for those who want to better mankind by participating in research, not just for some slacker who wants to chug beer, and cram for tests, while hoping to get a damn piece of paper (degree) which actually means nothing.

BA in Political Science, baby.

Know what I do with it? Vote. Joke's on me, huh?

But seriously...Know what I do in the way of remunerated labor? Cook. Fry meats and vegetables in a wok. I'm not even Thai. Does that mean I don't bring the pain when they want it spicy? Ha, you wish!

I'm about to start temping. As in, doing DATA ENTRY for a TEMP AGENCY. The $8.00/hr will actually be a pay raise at this point. Anybody read Harper's Index?
--------
Number of years I have worked at my current (cooking) job: 2.5

Number of jobs I have applied for since this time last year: 25

Number of job interviews I've had in the same period of time: 3

Years since I graduated: 2.3
---------
Anyone else want to commiserate? Because I don't know about you, but I sure hate looking for a job.

Deffinitly.... and work while you're in school. It's nice to have the extra money coming in too smile If you can't get something exactly in your field, try for smething at least related... the degree is sort of a mandatory to get a job, but usually not enough.

If you can do co-op, DO IT.

I think social networking is really important too. I used to go to a cafe every day and spoke to one of the employees pretty often... turns out he's perfectly qualified for the company I worked for so I told my boss and he ended up getting hired.

Oh my....my BA will be in Political Science too. I'm hoping though that I get a spot in a good law school afterward.

Looking for a job sucks. In my job search several years ago, I went to this one agency where they pre-screen you for various companies that employ them. The kicker is they only send you to one company at a time. When I heard that, I shouldn't have even wasted my time. They sent me on an interview for a receptionist position at an insurance company. I went on a total of three interviews, I took personality tests, etc.

For the third trip, my contact said I was meeting their president. I thought, "This has to be the job offer. This is the third visit, what else could it be?" After maybe 5 or 10 minutes of general questions, the guy says, "I see you were a chimney sweep. Tell me about sweeping a chimney." I ask if he'd like the detailed version, and then I run through the typical sweep front to back. The fucker thanks me and sends me on my way. What the fuck!?! The kicker is I never heard from them again. I didn't even want the job, but I was willing to work anywhere at that point.

I lost count of all the interviews I did. I absolutely hate the process, but what can you do? I'm so glad I have a stable job!
